CATHERINE GFELLER
January 14 =AD February 21, 2006

Stephen Haller Gallery is proud to present the work of the
internationally
known photographer Catherine Gfeller. Born in
Switzerland and a longtime
resident of Paris, Gfeller brings a
sophisticated, thoughtful sensibility to
bear on the experience of
contemporary urban life.

Negotiating the boundaries between intimacy and isolation, public
and
private life Gfeller captures the human element in a blur of
cityscape.
With a distinctly fresh new 21st century vision she
embraces the digital
revolution. Drawn to a "shifting, mobile
environment" she incorporates a
range of new approaches yet grounds
her work on sheets of fine art paper.
Her complex technique reveals a
familiar yet altered reality.

Catherine Gfeller gives us a sense of immersion in the rhythms
of
metropolis. Her work is based in reality, yet her
sophisticated
manipulation and organization of multiple images encompasses
shifting
points of view - the result is nearly an abstraction.

Critics often use musical analogies in discussing her work and
Gfeller
herself states:

I feel more like a composer who likes to work in
images, in
associations, repetitions, superimpositions, rather than
a
photographer who isolates a single image. This enables me to include
in
the composition some suggestion of how our
visual-emotional-affective
perceptions work: with layers, flash-backs
and disappearances.

Gfeller describes her work as "a narrative without narration: a
combination
of people and architecture as if they were hybrid
creatures half urban, half
human."=20

The art of Catherine Gfeller
encompasses the thrill of immersion in a vast
scintillating cityscape.
At the same time she challenges us to contemplate
the experience of
perception itself.
