<nettime-ann> Upcoming; RFID workshop {AT} Mediamatic 14 |15|16 November 2006

.
RFID & The Internet of Things
14 | 15 | 16 november 2006

<x-tad-smaller>A workshop for designers and artists who want to learn about using RFID and about the cultural effects of the current wide-scale implementation of RFID.
In this 3 day workshop you’ll make your own prototype project in which the virtual and the real world come together by using rfid tools. You get hands-on experience with rfid technology and develop first layouts of possible applications, alternative uses and hacks.

</x-tad-smaller><x-tad-smaller>Context</x-tad-smaller><x-tad-smaller>
RFID plays a pivotal role in joining the physical world with the digital. An object tagged with an RFID chip has a unique digital identity. Any kind of online data can be linked to these unique ID's. Here is where the real world and the internet become two faces of the same reality. Things go online, in other words, an internet of things evolves.</x-tad-smaller>

We have great RFID tools for participants with little technical knowledge: Mediamatics' RFID powered Symbolic Table (www.mediamatic.net/symbolictable) and the Nokia3220 RFID phone (www.elasticspace.com). Next to this there will be a large collection of different low- mid- and high frequency RFID readers and tags to experiment with.

The participation fee is now reduced to €200 per person, excl. VAT. Lunches, technical equipment and assistance are included. Students prices can be negotiated.
