/[El hombre contemporáneo] ignora el hecho de que, con toda su 
racionalidad y eficiencia, está poseído por “poderes” que están fuera de 
su control. Sus dioses y demonios no han en absoluto desaparecido, sino 
que han adquirido nuevos nombres. Lo mantienen a la carrera con 
incansables y vagas aprensiones, complicaciones psicológicas, y una 
necesidad insaciable de píldoras, alcohol, tabaco, comida – y, por 
encima de todo, una larga serie de neurosis./
(Jung, 1964:82)

*Neurótica* es un proyecto de investigación que examina las ansiedades 
de la sociedad contemporánea, generadas por los rápidos avances en 
ciencia y tecnología, y considera la forma en la que el individuo y la 
sociedad conviven con estas innovaciones y sus consecuencias. El 
proyecto ha sido diseñado por *Cápsula* <http://www.capsula.org.es/>, un 
grupo de investigación con base en Barcelona, iniciado por Mónica Bello 
Bugallo y Ulla Taipale que pretende generar productos culturales que 
traten la actual interrelación entre el arte, la ciencia y la naturaleza.

La primera fase de Neurótica explora la percepción social de la 
biotecnología y las esperanzas y temores a las que va asociada. El 
proyecto se inaugura en el Centre de Cultura Contemporánia de Barcelona 
(CCCB) el día 24 de Noviembre. Durante el evento la artista e inventora 
Natalie Jeremijenko presentará sus planteamientos sobre el tema, seguida 
de las intervenciones y comentarios del Dr. Alfonso Valencia, biólogo y 
Director del Centro Nacional de Biotecnología, y Fabio Tropea, sociólogo 
y analista de comunicaciones.

Este evento forma parte de NOW, Encuentros en el Presente Contínuo, un 
proyecto que refleja el momento presente en base a las transformaciones 
científicas, tecnológicas, artísticas, sociales y espirituales que se 
están llevando a cabo a comienzos del siglo XXI. NOW reúne a varios 
agentes locales e internacionales implicados en promover un cambio de 
paradigma de información y conocimiento en las culturas globalizadas.

His gods and demons have not disappeared at all; they have merely got 
new names. They keep him on the run with restlessness, vague 
apprehensions, psychological complications, an insatiable need for 
pills, alcohol, tobacco, food – and, above all, a large array of 
neuroses./ (Jung, 1964:82).

*Neurotica* is a research project that examines the anxieties of 
contemporary society, generated by the rapid advances made in science 
and technology, and looks at the way individuals and the community is 
coping with these innovations and their offshoots. The project has been 
designed and initiated by Capsula <http://www.capsula.org.es/>, an 
investigation group based in Barcelona, Spain, launched by Mónica Bello 
Bugallo and Ulla Taipale that generates cultural products exploring the 
interrelations between arts, science and nature.

The first phase of Neurótica is exploring society’s perception of 
biotechnology and the hopes and fears associated with it. The project 
will be launched by a conference presented at CCCB, Center of 
Contemporanean Culture of Barcelona on 24th November 2006. During the 
event Californian based artist and inventor Natalie Jeremijenko will 
present her views on these issues, followed by the interventions and 
comments of Dr. Alfonso Valencia, a biologist and head of The Spanish 
National Center of Biotechnology and Dr. Fabio Tropea, sociologist and 
language analyst.

The conference is part of “NOW - Meetings in the present continuous” –a 
project that reflects on the present on the basis of the scientific, 
technological, artistic, social and spiritual transformations taking 
place at the start of the 21st century. It aims to bring together local 
and international agents promoting a change of paradigm in current society.
