V2_: Vacancy Hardware Developer

For January 2009, V2_Lab is looking for a HARDWARE DEVELOPER to enhance
its team four days/30.4 hours a week. V2_Lab is the aRt&D (art research
and development) department of V2_ Institute for the Unstable Media.

V2_ was founded in 1981 and is currently based in central Rotterdam. V2_
is an interdisciplinary center working in the field of art, media and
technology with a special emphasis on research. It therefore has many
collaborative ties to institutions in various sectors (art, universities
and colleges, business). V2_Lab conducts research into the relationship
between art, technology, media and society and makes its projects
accessible through presentations. Over the past 25 years at V2_, a
growing Dutch and international public has been able to get acquainted
with prominent artists, theorists and projects at the intersection of
art, media and technology through exhibitions, presentations, symposiums
and performances. V2_ currently has 24 staff members working on a
permanent basis.

*About the Position

*Tasks:
The hardware developer will occupy an important position on the V2_Lab
team. He or she will work with software developers, designers,
production staff and artists. The hardware developer will design and
realize technological solutions to be used in a diverse range of
artistic projects. The work is varied and challenging in every respect.

V2_Lab’s areas of focus in the near future will include wearable
technology and augmented reality. This means the hardware developer will
work on the development and application of, for example, wireless
systems, networks and small wearable embedded-Linux computers with
sensors and actuators.

*Requirements:
The hardware developer will possess experience and skills in the areas of:

- Hardware and electronics design, simulation and implementation using
National Instruments Circuit Design Suite (previously Electronics
Workbench Multicap/Multisim and Ultiboard);
- Design and production of single-/double-sided print plates (in SMT) in
small quantities, for prototyping;
- Design and programming of small systems with modern microcontrollers
(ARM, AVR, PIC) and ARM-Linux systems;
- Modern inter- and intrasystem communication protocols (e.g. USB,
IEEE1394, MIDI, DMX, RS232, SPI, I2C, LVDS, I2S, etc.);
- Sensor technology and A/D converters;
- Machine control and control engineering.

In addition, knowledge of the following programming languages and
environments is desirable:

- C / C++
- Python
- MaxMSP & Jitter

And experience with the following programs is advantageous:

- Adobe Illustrator
- OmniGraffle
- Inkscape
- MS Visio.


*Desirable Characteristics:
The hardware developer will be interested in and well informed about
developments at the intersection of art, technology, science and culture
and therefore able to communicate effortlessly with experts in these
diverse fields. The successful candidate will possess the following
characteristics:

Per januari 2009 zoekt V2_Lab een HARDWAREONTWIKKELAAR (V/M) om haar
team voor 4 dagen / 30.4 uur per week te versterken. V2_Lab is de aRt&D
(art Research & Development) afdeling van V2_ Instituut voor de
instabiele media.

V2_ is opgericht in 1981 en momenteel gehuisvest in het centrum van
Rotterdam. V2_ is een interdisciplinair centrum op het gebied van kunst
en (media)technologie met speciale aandacht voor onderzoek. Het heeft
daardoor vele samenwerkingsverbanden met instellingen uit verschillende
sectoren (kunst, universiteiten, hogescholen en bedrijfsleven). V2_Lab
doet onderzoek naar de relatie tussen kunst, technologie, media en
samenleving, en maakt de projecten via presentaties toegankelijk. Een
groeiend nationaal en internationaal publiek heeft in de afgelopen 25
jaar bij V2_ kennis kunnen maken met prominente kunstenaars, theoretici
en projecten op het snijvlak van kunst, media en technologie door middel
van tentoonstellingen, presentaties, symposia en performances. Bij V2_
werken momenteel 24 medewerkers in vast dienstverband.

*Over de vacature Hardwareontwikkelaar

*Taken:
De Hardwareontwikkelaar neemt een belangrijke plaats in binnen het team
van V2_Lab. Hij of zij werkt daarin samen met softwareontwikkelaars,
ontwerpers, productiemedewerkers en kunstenaars. De hardwareontwikkelaar
houdt zich bezig met het ontwerpen en realiseren van technologische
oplossingen die worden toegepast in uiteenlopende kunstprojecten. Het
werk is in alle opzichten afwisselend en uitdagend.

V2_Lab richt zich de komende tijd onder andere op wearable technology,
en augmented reality. Dit betekent dat de hardwareontwikkelaar zal
werken aan de ontwikkeling en toepassing van bijvoorbeeld draadloze
systemen, netwerken en kleine draagbare embedded-Linux computers met
sensoren en actuatoren.

*Vereisten:
De kandidaat hardwareontwikkelaar heeft ervaring en deskundigheid op het
gebied van:

- Hardware en electronica ontwerp, simulatie en implementatie met
gebruikmaking van 'National Instruments Circuit Design Suite' (voorheen
'Electronics Workbench' 'Ulticap' / 'Multisim' en 'Ultiboard' )
- Ontwerp en productie van enkel- / dubbelzijdige printplaten (in SMT)
in kleine oplagen, voor prototyping.
- Ontwerpen & Programmeren van kleine systemen met moderne
microcontrollers (ARM, AVR, PIC) en ARM-Linux systemen.
- Moderne inter- en intra-systeem communicatie-protocollen (b.v. USB,

De hardwareontwikkelaar is geïnteresseerd in en goed geïnformeerd over
de ontwikkelingen op het snijvlak van kunst, techniek, wetenschap en
cultuur en kan dus moeiteloos communiceren met experts uit deze
uiteenlopende vakgebieden. De kandidaat hardwareontwikkelaar voldoet aan
de volgende eigenschappen:
