www.opengroups.org Introduction E-mail lists present an exciting directory development opportunity. Sponsors of specific e-mail lists know how difficult it is to promote an e-mail list and Internet users have an extremely difficult time finding active lists of interest. The dead weight of outdated list information severely limits the accessibility and use of active public e-mail discussion lists. It is almost impossible to locate more local lists or to determine which lists are the most active. Most list software programs offer an "info listname" command that returns a text file as formatted by the list owner. These files are rarely consistent and are difficult to combine into value-added directories. However, an initiative by list owners/managers (those who use these commercial and non-commercial products) could encourage list software developers to develop an additional "meta listname" command that would return a stand file based on an Open Groups XML draft. Ongoing support for a technically appropriate method of public metadata distribution and wide use of this information (private lists should not respond in full to the "meta" command) will be essential. There must be an open mechanism for competitive sites to use this directory information in their own directory systems in order to ensure wide use of the standard.
