[Nettime-bold] (Fwd) Banned Song News

I sincerely hope that not all radio stations in the US will subscribe
to this lunacy. I listen to K-Rock (fm92.3) in NYC and they,
although being right here on Manhattan, play all songs, and don't
follow some banned songs list. Banning songs is unconstitutional -
since it contravenes the principles of the First Amandement. And it
is just a step to banning all music - just like Taliban. No American
should stand for that. Otherwise, "the new war" is already lost.

NPR has reported that the Clear Channel Communications conglomerate has
banned scores of songs from play on the 1200 radio stations they own in the
United States. The NPR report and list (from the NPR website) is below:

Sept. 19, 2001 -- Last week an executive at radio
giant Clear Channel Communications sent its 1,200-plus stations a list
of songs with "questionable lyrics" in light of the terrorist
attacks. Some of them reference air travel ("Jet Airliner" by the Steve
Miller Band); others feature violent or troubling images ("Enter
Sandman" by Metallica). Still others advocate peace (John Lennon's
"Imagine";
the Youngbloods' "Get Together").

As NPR's Rick Karr reports, Clear Channel execs
insist the list was an "advisory," and stations weren't forced to follow
it. But artists and listeners are outraged that the largest owner of
radio stations in the United States -- and a company whose DJs are known
for killing live animals on the air -- would even consider such a
move.

According to the Web site Hitsdailydouble.com, the
artists and songs cited are:

                      Drowning Pool, "Bodies"
                      Mudvayne, "Death Blooms"
