[Nettime-bold] "Notice": interactive video art installation

"Notice"
An interactive video art installation
by D. Jean Hester

Art Exhibit and Opening Reception

"Notice" is an interactive installation that combines playful
audience-participation with video, user-submitted text, and computer
programming/databases.

"Notice" seeks to engage people to notice what exists around them as a way
of re-engaging with life, and as a way of contributing to the creation of
the artwork. By the simple act of being asked to share something they have
noticed, people become more tuned in to what is around them, perk up a bit,
cast off the haze of modern life, and see the beautiful, frightening,
wonderful, profound things around them every single moment. The only way
they can participate in "Notice" is to *notice*.

After the close of the gallery show, "Notice" will move online, where its
web-based incarnation/database will continue to grow and evolve.

This is the first solo show for Hester, a media artist/experimental
filmmaker/programmer based in Los Angeles.

Opening Reception: Friday March 7, 2003, 5:00 to 10:00 PM
Exhibit runs March 7 through March 29, 2003
Gallery Hours: Friday & Saturday 12 to 9, and by appointment

Slow Motion Pictures is a conceptual image gallery that is exploring new
ideas in images and time. The gallery seeks to reexamine and rediscover the
sometimes novel but often profound implications revealed during the birth of
motion pictures.

Interviewer: "Must an artist be a programmer to make truly original online
art?"
John Simon: "Truly original? You Modernist! Whether you make art or not,
understanding programming is an amazing understanding."
