<nettime> Third International Browserday



3RD INTERNATIONAL BROWSERDAY

PARADISO - AMSTERDAM - 19 MAY 2000

AN EVENT OF THE SOCIETY FOR OLD AND NEW MEDIA,
DE BALIE, PARADISO AND NL DESIGN

Amsterdam's temple of pop Paradiso is location of the third consecutive
International Browserday.

12 - 5 pm

>From 12pm onwards a selection of students of Arts Academies from India to
London will compete with new media designs for the next generation of
interfaces.  Participants have to wow the jury in an ongoing 3-minute
knock out show of browser presentations. Showmaster is John Thackara
(Doors of Perception). 

Members of the jury will look for stunning navigation structures and
browser concepts. They are: Willem Velthoven (Mediamatic), Jans Aasman
(KNP Research), Peter Kentie (Philips Design) , Anne Nigten (V2 Rotterdam)
and Ineke Schwartz (journalist).  The show will be interspersed by short
lectures and presentations by today's most compelling interaction and
multimedia professionals: Submarine (Bruno Felix, Femke Wolting) and
Razorfish. 

Will we see the END OF THE BROWSER as we know it?

8 - 11pm

The nominees chosen by the jury will get a rerun in the evening programme. 
The most convincing entree will be winner of the Browser Award, to be
handed over at the end of the evening. And than, it's time to party. 

A webcast of the Browserday will be supported by Digital City Amsterdam
(DDS) at http://live.dds.nl and the competition will be broadcast on
Amsterdam's Salto by Bellissima. 

ORIGINS OF THE BROWSERDAY

The idea for a Browser contest originates from the dissatisfaction of
designers of NL Design and Society for Old and New Media with the grey
buttons of existing browsers. They wanted to spark off a discussion
between software developers and designers on how to make technology work
for them.  Young design students were challenged to come up with
alternatives for the existing browsers on the 1st International
Browserday.  This was in 1998. 

Today, designers face new challenges. As the Internet has become booming
business, the only standard for design seems to be whether it works
moneywise. Originality and innovative design are only important in as far
as they boost sales or clickrates. Designers have to move within these
limitations of the available software tools on the one hand and the rules
of e-commerce on the other. 

The 3rd International Browserday shows the level of creativity that's
there if designers and developers are given the opportunity to show their
ideas and demo's. 

Preceding the Browserday, a multimedia dinner-debate will be held at De
Balie. At six online dinnertables guests are invited to discuss the
position of design in the new media environment. Aim of the dinner-debate
is to find a language in which designers can communicate with
technologists about their needs. The evening will also be an exploration
of the implications of increasing market forces who domineer the
development of new media applications and formats.  Admittance to the
dinner-debate is by invitation only.
