Dear Soeren,
maybe it would be interesting to compare/integrate the software codes in
the cryptographic (=assimilation of the discours to the reason -
oratio-ratio) and universal language (clavis universalis) traditions.
before the 19th c.: Plato, Pythagora, Horapollus, Plotinus, Porphyrius from
the Antiquity, the French and Dutch rhetorical handbooks from the Middle
Ages, the Ars Magna of Raimundus Lullus, Traicte des chiffres et secretes
manieres d'escrire of Blaise Vigenere, Stenographia of  Tritheme, the
Polygraphia nova et universalis of Athanasius Kircher, the a priori
languages of the 19 century - are just a few hints where to start.
