ceremony, from the preparations, the parade, the swearing-in and the
speeches. Experts will give information about the politicians captured on
screen, including their main financial contributors, their voting records,
and the policy changes they are likely to bring about.

This final Wiretap in the series 'Machine Times' queries the role of death
in digital culture.
Our current society is obsessed with progression.  In this scenario death
means the ultimate border.  Developments in science and technology have
always made an effort to extend life or realise the dream of immortality.
This Wiretap takes you beyond the final frontier.

Birgit Richard investigates how trans-humanists and extropians attempt to
eradicate the scourge of mortality.  Their heads are immersed, post-mortem,
in liquid nitrogen in cryogenic tanks till medical science finds a way to
reanimate them.  'Freeze Head, to Save Ass', indeed!

Who though the Internet and digital media are safeguarded from decay is
quite wrong.  More often information technology is fighting hypothetical
diseases such as 'bit rot', 'software decay' and 'link rot'.  In his
presentation 'Death and the Network' Jamie King debunks the popular
post-nuclear apocalypse myth surrounding the Internet.

Modern versions of occultism and shamanism evolve around machines and time.
Similar to Edison, who used his phonograph to reverberate the voices of the
deceased at Madame Blavatsky's seances, Sam Ashley's 'Everyone Laughed when
I sat down at the Piano' (authentic spirit possession as vocal technique),
Ghost Detector' and Jens Brand's computer controlled ratchets (The Ratchets)
formulate a contemporary answer.


Participants:

Prof. Dr. Birgit Richard (D)
Is since 1998 Professor of New Media at the Goethe University of Frankfurt
(Germany). Her fields of specialisation include: new media, aesthetics of
everyday life (contemporary youth cultures, fashion, design, pop culture),
life and death in real and virtual environments. She is editor of the
Kunstforum International Volumes on of Fashion, Time and Images of Violence,
and founder of the Youth Culture Archive, a collection of objects from
contemporary youth cultures. Her current research focuses on the
representation of women in computer games.

Jamie King (GB)
In addition to his work with the International Necronautical Society Jamie
King is a contributing editor at London technology and culture journal Mute
and editor of the industry journal n3, dedicated to the analysis of the
Domain Name System in business practice. He has recently completed a PhD
thesis at the University of Southampton examining the role of the American
frontier in the cultural construction of the Internet. He is now back to
work on a long overdue science-fiction novel, and can still be found any
evening you like attempting to write a hit two-step single in his project
studio.

Sam Ashley (USA)
has been singing for more than 15 years, developing an unusual Animal
Magnetism vocal technique. He has had principal roles in seven contemporary
operas by Robert Ashley, with whom he regularly performs and records, in
works by Alvin Lucier and in many other pieces too. He has designed digital
audio signal processing systems, designed custom music software (including a
stint with Sound Traffic Control) and done a wide range of recording
engineer, consulting and project studio jobs. Sam Ashley co-founded Very
Important Now, the Cactus Needle Project (acclaimed as an
electronic/computer music ensemble), and AA Bee Removal. Sam Ashley has
devoted his life to the invention of an experimental trance-mysticism and
the art that he does tends to reflect this. Seeing Things, Everyone laughed
when I sat down at the piano, Ghost Detector each feature a different
version of authentic spirit possession or a mystical theme.

Jens Brand (D)
studied visual arts in Münster, Germany. He lives and works as a composer,
musician, visual & audio-visual artist and organiser in Dortmund, Germany.
His pieces can appear as concerts, performances or installations. Recent
works have ended up being mixtures of these genres, developed as logical and
absurd games between the audience and the artist. His experiments with
everything that can be considered to be art are not supposed to establish a
belief or truth, but try to offer a fruitful soil for research,
communication and progressive failure. Pieces used in the collaboration
with Sam Ashley, such as Motors and Styrofoam, Mini Fan Music, PIANO or
RATCHETS appear as short duration installations that evoke something Jens
considers to be 'electronic music without speakers'.


Paul Perry (NL/CDN)
If artists be either misanthropist or socio-paths then Paul Perry sees
himself as belonging to the type misanthropist. As an artist, he divides his
attention between the study of diversity and its propagation and identity
and its survival. Recent examples of his work include the first part of a
multi-part film on the simulation of Near Death Experiences (1,000 Deaths:
Sortie 1, 2000), the development of a new constitution for the City of
Amsterdam (Amsterdam 2.0, 1998), the design of a small rock garden featuring
a sub-critical nuclear reactor (Nuclear Garden, 1998) and the creation of an
immortal man/mouse hybrid at the University of Maastricht (Good and Evil on
the Long Voyage, 1997).

extra: the first session after the performance in san francisco in
december. thank you to all who showed up, it was great to play for you!
some of our impressions in the U.S. doing field research, were morphed into
the new audio-visual composition. As a statement without words to the heavy
"dot.com = almost artist-free situation" there. Is san francisco a first
reaction to turbocapitalist globalization, where only commerce counts? The
city is cleared now from any psychedelic backgrounds, a fact the
european/german net critic scene could be happy about. But one has to see
here that it is cleared from art at the same time, too, which is very
dramatic.
The electronic art space in downtown, South of Market, where we performed
live, was closed down shortly after our gig. ("joypad/Blasthaus will be
closing until further notice. For those of you who did not know, there are
6 buildings on Mission/Minna Street which have been in escrow for 2 years.
The proposed
developer wishes to demolish these 6 brick  buildings and has proposed
building an 80,000,000$ office tower." Blasthaus statement).
Soundz a bit like the situation in Frankfurt to me, where so little space
is available for artistic projects, because rents are only affordable to
banks and companies. Two extreme cities - Frankfurt and San Francisco, who
stand in opposition to places like Berlin or Vienna, where art has less
space problems, and is tolerated as sort of entertainment. - (Elisa Rose

Techno cult piece by Station Rose´s composer Gary Danner re-released on DJ
Hell´s label International DeeJay Gigolos. Played in every club and on the
early Love Parades, the original "DAVE" from 1992 is out again, with
remixes by HAL9000 and Dopplereffekt. A good choice for your electronic
music collection.
With the german voice of HAL9000 of Kubrick´s "2001 Space Odyssey" on the
original, the remixes come up with the english voice now.
Originally scheduled to be released end of 2000, with a few little
production delays this vinyl landed in the right year:  2001.

"Dazzling style" is how judge Shelley Jackson describes the winning entry
in the second trAce/Alt-X New Media Writing Competition. The contest,
hosted by the trAce Online Writing Centre at The Nottingham Trent
University in partnership with the Alt-X Online Publishing Network, aims
to discover the best contemporary web-based writing and bring it to the
attention of the literary world both on and offline. The result and

This year's winner is Talan Memmott, an artist/writer from San Francisco,
California. Born in 1964, he came to writing by way of visual art, having
worked in video, installation art, painting, and performance art, as well
as working as a professional chef. His winning site 'Lexia to Perplexia'
http://trace.ntu.ac.uk/newmedia/lexia/index.htm combines design, theory
and fiction and provides a challenging example of what can be achieved on
the internet by artists who are brave enough to mix art and programming.

An Honourable Mention goes to Nick Montfort, William Gillespie & Dylan
Meissner, whose 'The Ed Report' combines hypertext and humour in a
hilarious clickable narrative.

Talan Memmott, who gave an innovative demonstration of his site at last
year's trAce Incubation conference using not a computer screen but three
whiteboards and coloured markers, won ?1000 when he rose to the top of a
shortlist featuring online-writers from South Korea, Australia, Brazil,
America, and the UK. On hearing he had won, he said, "This is fantastic! I
am truly honored to receive this award."

Artistic Director of trAce, Sue Thomas, said: "Talan Memmott was first
published by trAce in 1999 when his piece Reasoned Metagoria appeared in
frAme, our journal of culture and technology. His style is both elegant
and contemplative, a prime example of the best of the net."

Mark Amerika, Director of Alt-X, notes that Talan's work, "like so much of
the best new work emerging on the net, puts into play a renegotiation of
the image/text relationship."

This relationship between image and text has been a constant theme in
net-based writing, so much so that when this round of the competition was
launched, the organisers presented the competitors with a challenge -to
describe what kind of art they are making and what name they give to
themselves as writers/artists. Most were reluctant to be pinned down,
using such descriptions for their work as:

Hypertext : web-specific writing : net literature : Net Art :
net-art-writing : Interactive Fiction : Hypertext Fiction : hypermedia :
digital literature : lit[art]ure : cyberpoetry : Hypermedia Literature :

still works for me, because it means "maker."

PLUS  - A REDESIGN FOR TRACE

TrAce this week renames itself to the trAce Online Writing Centre and puts
on a different set of colours. The traditional upper case A typo remains,
but the well-known orange and black logo is transformed to shades of blue.
Artistic Director Sue Thomas said, "The new look heralds an expansion of
our services in 2001. This will be our most ambitious year ever, with
several exciting new projects in the pipeline, including an Online Writing
School and more support for professional online writers. We have also
added a new facility to the site so users can submit in their own news
stories about on and offline events."

Aims

''e-phos' 2001' is organized by the non profit cultural organization =
ALAS and aims to initiate a creative exchange of experiences and =
contacts in the sphere of culture and art, to develop the public=B4s =
understanding and appreciation of art, to support the efford of =
filmmakers, producers and distributors to find their place in the =
international audio-visual context.

Subjects

''e-phos 2001'' encompasses all arts, of any period or style, in the =
following disciplines: Painting, sculpture, architecture, design, =
crafts, fashion, decorative arts, music, photography, cartoon, cinema, =
literature, poetry, dance, theatre, performance art, multimedia art, =
interactive art, video art, landscape art, art history, museology and =
restoration.

Format

All films and videos will be presented only in BETACAM SP (PAL). All =
cd-roms should run in Windows 95 environment, in Mac or in both.

Language=20

All films or videos, cd-roms, and web sites must be either in Greek,or =
English, in their original, subtitled or dubbed version.

ENTRY Deadline

Each film (in VHS Pal), video (in VHS Pal), cd-rom, web site, submitted =
to ''e-phos 2001'' must be accompanied by the attached entry form and =
reach the Festival office properly completed and signed by=20

M A R C H  1, 2 0 0 1.

Registration Fees=20

All participating films, videos, cd-roms and web sites are not subject =
to any fee.

Transport=20

The cost of sending the video tapes of the films, videos (either VHS or =
BETACAM) and cd-roms is borne by the shipper. Registered mail and =
Courrier options are highly recommended. The Festival will assume =
responsability upon delivery only and will  bear the expense of the =
return shipment of the copies.

Deadlines

A BETACAM SP (PAL) copy of each film or video that has been selected to =
be presented in the festival must reach the Festival office by APRIL 15 =
2001

Required Documentation

The following material must reach the Festival office after the film, =
video, cd-rom or the web site has been officially selected:

complete credits, a biography, a filmography and photo of the director =
or designer, a biography of the artists appearing on the screen, a =
summary of the film, the video, the cd-rom or the web site, two posters =
(if available), the press kit, at least two stills black & white or =
colour of the film, video, cd-rom or site in digital or printed form (In =
case of digital please send properly addressed only TIFFS or JPEGS by =
using electornic mail: alas@ath.forthnet.gr =20

The producer, director, distributor or designer authorizes ''e-phos =
2001'' to reproduce photographs, texts and biographies in the catalogue.

Printed scripts in English=20

Printed scripts in english of all films, no matter in which language =
they are, should accompany either the VHS reviewing copies or reach the =
Festival office after the film has been officially selected. If the =
films are subtitled in english the printed scripts are optional.

Utilization Rights

''e-phos 2001''reserves the right to authorize television broadcasts of =
excerpts not exceeding three minutes and the publication of stills on =
magazines and newspapers for promotional purposes only.

Organizers do not return VHS preview copies, cd-roms and other enclosed =
material. All screening copies (BETACAM) will have been send back by =
June 30th, 2001.

As an extension of the Festival, the award-winning works will be shown =
in various cultural institutions.

The participation in ''e-phos 2001'' implies the acceptance without =

GENERAL INFO

The goal of v-nv-mobilize is to facilitate a respectful, international
dialog on activist "violence"/"nonviolence", in which people of differing views
can learn from one another, and people of similar views can discuss how to act
on them.  (Quotation marks are used here for the sake of openness, to
recognize the many uses of these words.  This is not a convention others need
follow.)

This invitation is being sent to over 400 people, lists, and organizations,
representing a wide range of:
* geographical locations
* issues of primary focus
* political views
* positions on "violence"/"nonviolence"
* types of involvement in the mobilizations.

(The initial invitations for v-nv-mobilize were sent on 17 Jan 01.  If you
visit the webpage or subscribe soon thereafter, there will not be much going
on yet.   Join the list, post your reflections, and help start the
conversation!)

The list is unmoderated -- which means self-moderated -- with an open
subscription policy.  Its primary language is English. 

v-nv-mobilize is for examination of activist "violence"/"nonviolence" as a
movement issue, across different mobilizations.  Practical applications will
hopefully be discussed, but this is not the primary organizing list for any
mobilization.

v-nv-mobilize focuses on the "violence" and "nonviolence" of activists,
because it is a list for activists (in the broadest sense), and aims to help us
direct our own movement.   The "violence" or "nonviolence" of police and the
prisons are uncontroversial among activists, and are widely addressed on the
internet.   The same is not the case with our own behavior.


WHY THIS NEW LIST?

There have been all kinds of activist "violence" and "nonviolence" at the
mobilizations of the past two years.   v-nv-mobilize was inspired by --  but is
not limited to! -- some of the events at S26 Prague:  activist/independent
media reports were that a small minority of activists threw cobblestones and
Molotov cocktails at police, and similarly attacked delegates, injuring tens
of people, at least two seriously.  

Research for this list turned up numerous accounts of and reactions to these
events, but hardly any extended discussion, especially of activist
"violence"/"nonviolence" as a general issue for the movement.

During that research, another example of "violence" occurred at N30 (2000)
Nice, where activist/independent sources reported that some activists started
a fire at a bank, and then drove off firefighters by throwing rocks.

Note: v-nv-mobilize is not concerned only with these potentially lethal
actions; they serve as dramatic examples to argue that we activists should be
talking more about the whole spectrum of our "violence"/"nonviolence" at the
mobilizations.

And to repeat, the goal of v-nv-mobilize is to bring all sides together, not
to advance one view of the issue.  All perspectives on activist
"violence"/"nonviolence" deserve public discussion in depth, due to their significance
in:
* movement strategy and tactics
* mobilization organizing
* media and other outreach
* (for some people) morality and spirituality.

So why are these matters not more talked about?  To be sure, each
mobilization is different, and where there is less likelihood of serious "violence", it
is understandable that there is less attention paid to the issue.  But these
mobilizations are part of a common movement, however it is understood: what
happens in Prague affects what happens in Washington DC and vice versa, on
the streets and in the conference rooms.

Three other reasons to avoid this challenging topic come up often:   
1) "Let's not divide ourselves."
2) "Let's focus on the practicalities of organizing, not on abstractions."
3) "Our view on "violence"/"nonviolence" is settled.  There's no need for
dialog with other groups."

Each of these points may be valid for some people and some forums.  But
v-nv-mobilize is a list for people who feel differently.


SECURITY
v-nv-mobilize is essentially public, as is its archive.  Eddresses will be
concealed in the archive and the members list, but not in the "From" field of
postings.  This will hopefully prevent people's eddresses from being
"harvested",  but it will not provide real "security".  Bear this in mind at all
times.

The lack of security does favor people of the "nonviolent" view, especially
among those who live under more repressive states, because they may feel more
free to express themselves.   But the research for this invitation turned up
many groups whose websites or lists approve of or advocate revolutionary
"violence", so hopefully these people will feel just as free to express
themselves on this list.
