The official press release will be issued by Carolyn Bane of PS1. <press@ps1.org> Toshio Iwai, recipient of the 1997 Ars Electronica Golden Nica, the 2000 ID Magazine Interactive Media Design Review, whose first works in America were two installations in the permanent collection of the Exploratorium in San Francisco, will hold his first major American museum showing at PS1/MoMA in Queens from this Friday August 31st, 2001 until September 9th. Here are two sneak preview URLs of the two pieces that he'll be showing. http://www2.gol.com/users/iwai/PS1data/SOUND-LENS.html Sound lens is a machine which converts light into sound. There will be a walkthrough maze of different light/sound concepts installed in the gallery. We are also planning some sight-listening tours in Manhattan with the artist and a few individuals, using the sound lens. Please contact me for information. http://www2.gol.com/users/iwai/PS1data/AnotherTime.html Another Time Another Space is an older work of Iwai's (1993) which reflects his interest in pre-cinematic moving image techniques applied to modern technology. It is a contagiously fun piece, often staged in large public places. Iwai's bio is here: http://www2.gol.com/users/iwai/PS1data/index.html Iwai's solo show is the final of a series of shows within "Buzz Club," an overview of how media culture meets street culture in contemporary Japan. Here are some other usefull URLs for Buzz Club: http://www.nytimes.com/2001/08/03/arts/design/03BUZZ.html http://www.nytimes.com/2001/08/12/fashion/12RECY.html?searchpv=day03 http://www.shift.jp.org/world/047/nyc.shtml http://www.ps1.org/cut/buzz/buzz.html Hope to see you at PS1! Saturday the 2nd is recommended for the additional DJ, dance and other activities. If you'd like to relax and see the work at your leisure, weekdays are probably better. Yours, David d'Heilly, co-curator, Buzz Club 917 805-4490 ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 30 Aug 2001 08:25:27 +1000 From: s|a|m <sam@media.com.au> Subject: Design Call - WOOMERA2002 - Deadline Sep 3rd midnite (please feel free to forward - thanx) DESIGN TASK #1: LOGO for WOOMERA 2002 - --------------------------------------------------------------- Deadline: Sept 3rd - Midnight [australian EST] This call is for designers to come up with a logo or graphic which symbolises the planned journey to Woomera in 2002, which is currently being planned by a small collective. The logo/graphic should be empowering and communicate active action opposing detention centres, missiles, nuclear weapons, toxic waste and supporting indiginous land rights, no borders and diversity... The logo/graphic should be positive and should connect with people who are not necessarily activists - but are concerned about the issues Woomera represents. Familiar/non-threatening imagery/iconography would be great! The logo/graphic can be in colour but should work in black/white also. What is being asked for is someone to come up with the equivalent of the 'jabiluka - hand' (http://www.sea-us.org.au/images/icons/handsoff.gif) equivalent for Woomera 2002 :-) The logo/graphic can have text associated with it - and the URL - www.woomera2002.com should be able to easily associated with it as well (though it does not have to be incorporated to the logo) Here's some ideas which an image should bring out: freedom, movement, caravan, journey, diversity... Please send your design to sam@media.com.au for consideration by the collective. The deadline for contributions is September 3rd (midnight), 2001. Please note that if your contribution is used it is most likely that you will never receive any recognition for it. There are no planned credits or acknowledgements and your contribution may be altered, edited, and basically changed by other designers... So, when submitting - please bare that in mind. But we do require visual communicators, so your contribution will certainly be valued and your work will be respected. Below is some more detail - some of more which can be found at www.woomera2002.com Woomera is a remote town, 500 kms from Adelaide (Australia). It is also the centre of an economy of death, suffering and incarceration founded on the dispossession of indigenous lands. Woomera can be represented by a concentration camp, by missiles, by nuclear weapons, by toxic waste, by colonisation, by capitalism, by fear and division. Woomera 2002 will be a kaleidoscope of cascading autonomous actions, media streams and screenings, workshops, discussions and happenings to disrupt the present and create the future. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 30 Aug 2001 02:02:31 -0500 From: NOT BORED! <notbored@panix.com> Subject: 7s01 coverage so far Planet Internet (translated from the French) http://www.notbored.org/planet-internet.html Salon (English original) http://www.notbored.org/salon2.html ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 30 Aug 2001 17:36:06 +0200 From: Andreas Broeckmann <abroeck@transmediale.de> Subject: tm.02 deadline EXTENSION/VERLAENGERUNG *** NEWS *** transmediale.02 deadline EXTENSION/VERLAENGERUNG Due to the summer break many people have requested a small extension of the deadline for submitting work to the transmediale.02 competition. I thought what we might do is this -- so to as prevent the operators of the webcams from preemptively shutting their cameras down before the performances can take place (this is a distinct possibility in Minneapolis and NYC), I thought I'd wait until 5 Sept or 6 Sept until I complete this web page http://www.notbored.org/7s01.html so that it includes all the groups, all their locations, all the times, and all the webcam URLs. Come sunrise 7 Sept 2001, someone could visit and see everything (or as much as possible, given the usual constraints) Bill PS. remember: we're supposed to go in order, like this -- San Fran 10 am Arizona 11 am Minneapolis noon NYC 1 pm etc etc ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 30 Aug 2001 14:51:12 -0700 From: "Anastasia Kitsos" <anasandra@attcanada.net> Subject: =?iso-8859-1?Q?Life_back_in_town_=28an_epilogue=29_/Le_retour_=E0_la_vie_?= =?iso-8859-1?Q?en_ville_=28un_=E9pilogue=29?= :: version française çi-bas :: AUGUST 30 AOUT 2001 LIVE FROM THE TUNDRA Life back in town (an epilogue) http://www.nunatinnit.net Hundreds of kilometres, and a day-long boat ride across the Arctic Ocean from the nearest phone or power lines, a group of Inuit and non-Inuit inhabitants of a remote outpost camp on Canada¹s Baffin Island are sending daily audio and video dispatches to the rest of the world via the Internet, thanks to cutting-edge satellite phone and mobile computing technologies.
