Subject: <nettime> Cabinet magazine: lexicon of crisis

Cabinet magazine, a quarterly cultural magazine based in New York, would
like to invite the readers of Nettime to contribute to a "lexicon of
crisis" that we are currently compiling. Parts of this lexicon will be
printed in issue 5 of Cabinet magazine in December 2001, and a larger
section will be placed online as an ongoing project on Cabinet's website
(http://www.immaterial.net/cabinet). Entries will be credited, of course.

Each entry should define a specific word of your choosing that is
mobilized in moments of national crisis. Examples are "security,"
"border," "purity," "evil" or even "crisis"....Entries can be between one
sentence and 300 words (negotiable). You can address the history,
genealogy, and etymology of the term, its current (ab)uses, and so on.
Raymond Williams's "Keywords" is one possible model. Although the current
situation is an obvious source, we would like the entries to be part of of
the standard vocabulary used in crises in general. We are of course
assuming that:

1. There is a changing but somewhat stable set of words that are invoked
when nation-states feel threatened. 2. The hidden connotations of this
discourse need to be explored and clarified.

Entries for the print version need to be here by 9/30/01. Web entries are
accepted on an ongoing basis. Please reply to this address.

We look forward to receiving your words.

Thank you

Cabinet

Mendi Obadike Textifies Online

Intermedia artist Mendi Lewis Obadike presents
"keeping up appearances", a hypertextimonial. In the
tradition of black feminist artists Faith Ringgold and
Audre Lorde, Obadike makes art out of what is said and
not said. Her past projects have examined
intersections of sound, propriety, and enactments of a
black female aesthetic. This project is part of her
"Black.net.art" actions. See "keeping up appearances"

Subject: CALL DOCS ONLINE 2001 AMSTERDAM

CALL FOR PROPOSALS DIGITAL DOCUMENTARY PROJECTS

Special programme IDFA 2001
23-30 november, Amsterdam

What's the impact of new, digital media on the traditional, creative
documentary?
This year's DOCS ONLINE will raise some new questions looking at documentary
filmmaking and what the effects and possibilities are when working with
digital media and the internet. Starting off with a selection of interesting
digital documentary projects, the International Documentary Filmfestival
Amsterdam (IDFA) will allow space and time to exchange ideas, present work
and discuss the impact of the changing infrastructure on the documentary
landscape.

DOCS ONLINE.2 will be an inspiring platform for a broad audience; from
traditional documentary-filmmakers to webaddicts, from researchers to
producers, from students to experienced professionals.
In addition to debates, presentations and ofcourse a special website, the
audience can participate in discussions and meet the guests invited for this
program.
The central issue of debate will be "The Real versus Mediated Life".
Media-experiences have a big impact on the way we watch the world around us.
Media have become our senses, and experiences in the 'real world'
increasingly refer to information we have already absorbed and images coming
to us through media. Are there new ways of communicating
documentary-stories? How are filmmakers and their audiences reacting to
CNN, docu-soaps and information overload?

DOCS ONLINE explores the changing nature of authorship, presents tools for
documentary content production and distribution and invites a growing
online community to participate in the programme.

CALL FOR PROPOSAL
IDFA invites individuals and organisations to send in proposals for DOCS
ONLINE. Check the IDFA website for more information www.idfa.nl or email to
the editors of the team:
Carolien Euser and Nathalie Faber info@cut-n-paste.nl
We are looking for online-documentary projects and filmmakers with an
interesting take on the use of digital media. Organisations which explore
the infrastructure of the web as a platform for documentaries are also
invited to come forward. Deadline 15th of October 2001

During the festival the public will have permanent access to the DOCS ONLINE
computers at the festivallocation 'de Balie'. There will also be
possibilities in presenting 'offline works' (cd-rom, dvd). Please send in
your details, data, a description of your project (max. 10 lines), URL's
and/or tapes/cd's to
IDFA Kleine Gartmanplantsoen 10 1017 RR Amsterdam.

Subject: Scene Strike Five - the official results

Being expected for almost three years, the Since Strike event, organized by
the Corrosion group from Belgrade, happened again for the fifth time. Scene
Strike Five took place at Dom omladine in Belgrade, September 21-23, 2001.

SS5 was conceived as a two days / two nights party and competition. Votes
of the audience determined the winners in each entry category.

SS5 showed that the independent computer art production in Serbia is very
alive and kicking and in the last three years the scene has significantly
advanced.

SS5 is proud to announce...
