1. Prix Ars Electronica 2002 - The Winners

1.373 artists from 80 countries entered 2.356 works this year in the 16th edition of the most important cyberarts competition with the longest tradition worldwide.
Five juries of international experts met from April 19 to 21 at the ORF Upper Austrian Regional Studio in Linz to judge the best works in the cyberarts competition Prix Ars Electronica 2002.
18 money prizes amounting to a total of Euro 109.900 will be awarded at the Awards Presentation on September 9, 2002 at the ORF Upper Austrian Regional Studio. The prizes of the Prix Ars Electronica 2002 go to the USA, Japan, France, Sweden, Great Britain, Australia, Canada, India and Austria.

The Prix Ars Electronica 2002 Awards Presentation will take place during the Ars Electronica Festival on Monday, September 9, 2002, at the ORF Upper Austrian Regional Studio, and will be broadcast live via the satellite program 3sat at 9 :00 p.m. and later at 12:30 a.m. on ORF2.
Cyberarts 2002
A selection of the best works of the Prix Ars Electronica will be shown at the O.K Center for Contemporary Art in Linz, beginning Saturday, September 7, 2002.
Artists' Forum
During the 3-day artists' forum from September 10 to 12, 2002, the prize winners (Golden Nica and Awards of Distinction) will present their works in person to an audience at the ORF Upper Austrian Regional Studio in Linz.

The Digitalis Digital Art Society and the Evergreen Cultural Centre
announce DIGITALIS 2: THE SPIRITUAL IN DIGITAL ART, a group
exhibition of digital print, object, interactivity, music and
performance. The exhibition will run from February 23 - March 29,
2003. Please submit a maximum of 3 low resolution JPEG or GIF files
as well as a bio, artist statement and proposal to electric@telus.net
by June 1, 2002.
The Evergreen Cultural Centre http://www.evergreenculturalcentre.ca
is located in Coquitlam, British Columbia, Canada, near Vancouver (3
hours north of Seattle.) Proposed work can be in the form of print,
objects such as stereo lithography output, interactive CD/DVD-ROM and
Web works, and computer aided music and performance. Shipping to the
gallery will be the responsibility of the artist. The gallery will

On Saturday, May 25, Raccoon will celebrate Memorial Day,
remembering the 1995 Tuzla massacre in which 71 Bosnian teen
were killed on the 'Day of Youth' (which in former Yugoslavia was
celebrated as Tito's birthday).
At 7 pm, we will have screening of Denis Tanovic's film NO MAN'S
LAND, the winner of this year's Oscar for the best foreign film.
On Friday, June 7, at 7 pm, Raccoon will present WOMEN, THE
FORGOTTEN FACE OF WAR, a documentary about the war in
Kosovo and the womens' suffering due to it. The directors Susan
Muska and Greta Olafsdottir, Rockefeller Media Arts Fellows, will
be present at the showing for the Q&A session.
Film is in Albanian with English subtitles, 84 minutes.
Raccoon is currently looking for travel stories from former
Yugoslavia for its Cyber-Yugo project.

production. What we're doing is pretty simple--providing a living wage to
union producers here and in the developing world, a competitive product for
consumers and a reasonable return for investors. We can do all that if we
don't have to advertise. That's the big if. Will the community spread the
word about a for-profit venture? On the plus side, we don't compete with the
existing non-profits for scarce resources and attention!

Giving License to Creativity: Our initial goal is to provide an easy way for people (like scholars, musicians, filmmakers, and authors--from world-renowned professionals to garage-based amateurs) to announce that their works are available for copying, modification, and redistribution. We are building a Web-based application for dedicating copyrighted works to the "public domain," and for generating flexible, generous licenses that permit copying and creative reuses of copyrighted works.
Shining a Spotlight on Sharing: We want to make it easy for people to find works that are in the public domain or licensed on generous terms. We are developing a method for labeling such works with metadata that identify their terms of use. Potential users could then search for works (say, photos of the Empire State Building) based on the permitted uses (say, noncommercial copying and redistribution).

In May, fineArt forum launches their new screen website @
http://www.fineartforum.org/screen. Curated by editor-in-chief nisar
keshvani, to celebrate fAf's 15th anniversary, the travelling screen
program : 'fineArt in Motion' showcases 14 young and emerging artists from
across the globe. The program will be screened in Singapore's 'The
Substation' on 20 June, as part of its Moving Images program (watch this
space for details). The website's webmistress is Tan Yiru and content
editor is Noel Tan. Also check out the sumptuous postcard, designed by
Juraimi Jumahat and Andre Ho, currently on display online at fAf's webzine.

Chairperson, Nina Czegledy waxes lyrical about Australia's new media scene
after her whirlwind tour in February.
