It means I (and so Mark Tribe) am not one of you tres chic intellectual that live off your family inherit or whatever and have the privilege of working full day without bothering about the pas tres chic everyday reality. (snip) Oh dear; so little you know about me yet so much you assume (wrongly)... the defensive tone suggests that further discussion might be pointless. All we have seen to date in support of Rhizome placing a charge on public access (to freely provided works of art), are rather ambiguous references delivered with a spoonfull of scorn - "how dare you challenge Rhizome on this" (isn't this what you are really saying?) - Well, I don't live in the US and lack an understanding of what is acceptable amongst your NFP's... in my part of the world NFP's are accountable to the public beyond the simple requirement to provide annual audit reports... however it's all moot... obviously the value of this charge to Rhizome exceeds any considerations they may have concerning loss to the public or artists. Were it otherwise we would not be bantering words in this manner, we would be productively discussing financial sustainability alternatives... however recent posts clearly suggest that Rhizome is not interested (nor seemingly is anyone else... perhaps it is time for a new topic). You know, I really must have gotten into using this internet-thing way too late. That whole "information should be free" meme just hasn't seemed to have colonized me yet. The idea that somebody's hard work, hardware, server fees and office space SHOULD be given out to all and sundry absolutely free of charge just because most people can't afford it strikes me as somewhat....like entitlement culture? [Oh, god, with a comment like that, not only am I going to have to give Rhizome $5, but I'm going to have to shell out for Rush Limbaugh as well.] LOOK FOLKS: the dot-com boom is over, the bubble burst, your infinite-horizon rhetoric is ranked over there with "better living through chemistry" for applicability. It's nice when people come together in free communities. It's nice when somebody donates time, money, infrastructure, etc to make things happen. It's NICE, but it ain't a law of nature. Deal with it. -the Other Michael http://www.xradiograph.com http://www.alternativetonoise.com http://www.watermelonpunch.com/whirl/ http://www.nepablog.com "If you want to build a ship, don't drum up people together to collect wood or assign them tasks and work, but rather teach them to long for the endless immensity of the sea." --Antoine de Saint Exupery -----Original Message----- from: nettime's_jetset [mailto:nettime@bbs.thing.net] sent: Monday, January 27, 2003 4:18 PM to: Nettime subject: <nettime> 9 out of 10 paupers recommend rhizome digest [bowman, giordano] - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - # distributed via <nettime>: no commercial use without permission # <nettime> is a moderated mailing list for net criticism, # collaborative text filtering and cultural politics of the nets # more info: majordomo@bbs.thing.net and "info nettime-l" in the msg body # archive: http://www.nettime.org contact: nettime@bbs.thing.net
