CALL FOR APPLICANTS: SEALAND IDENTITY PROJECT
Do you also believe that graphic design and visual communication should come
to terms with network society in the fullest sense of the word? Do you agree
that the visionary and the epic should be re-introduced into a design
context obsessed by individual lifestyle? Do you have a passion for fiction
and a weak spot for spy stories? Do you believe that design research - the
development of hypothetical notions and visionary statements - should be a
bigger part of your work, too? Would you like to be part of the design team
for a national identity? Then be introduced to Meta Haven, a one-year
research project initiated by designer Daniel van der Velden at the Jan van
Eyck Academie in Maastricht, the Netherlands.
The objective of this project is to develop a national identity for Sealand,
a mini-state off the British coast. The project, resulting in a printed and
internationally distributed publication, will concern itself with stamps,
money, passports and flags as much as with the network society, the
fictionalisation of history, and the 'data haven'. For a precise outline of

student, and you want to learn and discuss on a more in-depth level what

The international solidarity with Cuba is evident throughout the world with
the worldwide response to the document: "Call to the Conscience of the
World" .
A growing number of Intellectuals and professionals, writers, artists and
public personalities, from the US, Latin American and the Caribbean, Africa
and Asia, who are warning of the danger hanging over Cuba at a time when
Washington is designing an international fascist tyranny , have made this
message theirs demanding respect for the Cuban people and their
self-determination to build a society in which justice and the most
elemental human values prevail.
CALL TO CONSCIENCE OF THE WORLD
The international order has been violated as a consequence of the invasion
against Iraq. A single power is inflicting grave damage to the norms of
understanding, debate and mediation amongst countries. This power has
invoked a series of unverified reasons in order to justify its invasion.
Unilateral action has led to massive loss of civilian life an devastation
of one of the cultural patrimonies of humanity.
We only possess our moral authority, with which we appeal to world
conscience in order to avoid a new violation of the principles, which
inform and guide the global community of nations. At this very moment, a
strong campaign of destabilization against a Latin American nation has been
unleashed. The harassment against Cuba could serve as a pretext for an
invasion. Therefore, we call upon citizens and policy makers to uphold the
universal principles of national sovereignity, respect of territorial
integrity and self-determination, essential to just and peaceful
co-existence among nations.

No to Renewal of ISA Detention! 2 Years is 2 Much!!
In June 2003, the 2-year detention order without trial of six political
prisoners under the draconian Internal Security Act (ISA) of Malaysia will
expire. These six political prisoners are:

They have been detained in April 2001 prior to a mass demonstration against
the Dr. Mahathir’s authoritarian government to mark the first anniversary of
the injustice imprisonment of former deputy prime minister, Anwar Ibrahim,
whom was convicted on 14 April 2000.
Although Dr. Mahathir’s government has failed to produce even a single shred
of evidence to prove that the six political prisoners had attempted to
overthrow the government through militant means as alleged after two years,
the political prisoners continued to languish in the infamous Kamunting
Detention Camp, deprived of their right to defend themselves in an open
court against the government allegations. Amnesty International has declared
these six political prisoners as prisoners of conscience.
More importantly, on 6 September 2002 the Federal Court of Malaysia had
ruled that the detention of these men were mala fide (in bad faith). This
view was also adopted by the ISA Advisory Board, who recommended that the
six men be released. In a landmark report on the review of the ISA, which
was released on 9 April 2003, the National Human Rights Commission (Suhakam)
has recommended to the Malaysian government to abolish the ISA and replace
it with security laws that comply to human rights.
Actions needed
Under the ISA, the Home Minister will have to decide whether to release or
sign a new 2-year detention order to extend the detention order of a
detainee once the existing detention order expires. We urge you to support
the GMI campaign “No to Renewal of ISA Detention! 2 Years is 2 Much!!” to
stop the unjust detention of these political detainees.
There are many ways you can support this campaign and help the political
prisoners to secure their freedoms. We appeal to your organisation to extend
your support against the unjust detention of these six political prisoners
by organising one or more of the following actions in the period of April –
June 2003:
1. Send letters via email, fax to the Home Minister before 2 June 2003
calling for the immediate and unconditional release of the political
prisoners, repeal the ISA and not to extend the detention order of the
political prisoners to another two years.

3. Pass resolution in your organisation’s meetings or conference before 2
June 2003 calling for the repeal of the Internal Security Act and the

4. Issue press statement calling for the repeal of the Internal Security Act
and the release of the political prisoners before 2 June 2003.
5. Ask your government to voice the concerns over the continuous detention
of the 6 political detainees with the Malaysian government and diplomats
before 2 June 2003 and urge the release of the prisoners.
6. Ask your Member of Parliament to join MPs worldwide in signing petition
letter before 2 June 2003 calling for the release of the political prisoners
detained under the ISA. Please find attached a copy of the MP petition
letter.
7. Protest in front of the Malaysian embassy or consulate or Malaysian
Airline office in you country and city within April – June 2003 to urge the
Malaysian government to release the political prisoners detained under the
ISA.
8. Protest in front of the Malaysian embassy or consulate or Malaysian
Airline office on 2 June 2003 if the detention period of the political
prisoners is extended to another two years without charge, when their first
detention order expires on 2 June 2003.

Press Statement

1. The detention order under Section 8 (ISA) of six (6) Reformasi detainees
will end in June 2003. The detention order of Mohd Ezam Mohd Noor, Tian
Chua, Hishamuddin Rais and Saari Sungib will expire on 1 June 2003 and the
detention order of Lokman Adam and Dr. Badrulamin Bahron will end on 12 June
2003.
2. The ISA empowers the Home Affairs Minister to issue further 2-year
detention orders.
3. GMI appeals to the YAB Dato’ Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, the Home
Minister not to issue any new detention orders. It would be an unspeakable
injustice to issue a new order because:
i. The Federal Court on the 6th September 2002 had judged that their
detention was unlawful and mala fide;
ii. SUHAKAM, the National Human Rights Commission of Malaysia, had
repeatedly called for their release;
iii. the Advisory Board setup under the ISA has recommended twice to the
Home Minister in December 2002 and May 2003 respectively to stop the
detention orders.
4. GMI is of the opinion that there is no more ground for any continued
detention of these six detainees. If the government persist to continue
their detention, GMI demands that the government produce their evidence in
court. Given these circumstances, any extension or renewal of detention of
these six political detainees would completely go against the grain of rule
of law and make a mockery of the democracy of this country. It would send a
strong signal to the general public and the international community that the
rule of law simply does not exist in this country with the government
sweeping aside judgements of court and recommendations of its own statute.
5. GMI reiterates that the ISA deprives completely the right of the detainee
to an open and fair trial, the right to legal counsel and the right to be
presumed innocent until proven guilty. We call for the immediate and
unconditional release of these six political detainees and would oppose any
renewal of their detention order.
6. The families of the detainees will visit the Kamunting Detention Camp on
1 June 2003 to demand for the immediate release of their loved ones. The
families convoy will start at 8.00 am at Rawang R&R and arrive at the
Kamunting Detention Camp at 12.00 afternoon.
7. Gerakan Mansuhkan ISA (GMI) calls on supporters of anti-ISA campaign to
accompany the families to the Kamunting Detention Camp on 1 June 2003 as a
show of solidarity to the detainees and the families. Supporters can join
the families convoy at 8.00 am at the R&R Rawang or 12.00 noon at Kamunting
Detention Camp.
8. GMI welcomes the timely calls of 41 foreign members of Parliament from
Japan, United Kingdom and The Netherlands in urging our government to
release the six political detainees immediately and not to renew their
detention orders when they expire.
9. Lastly, GMI calls on the government to accept the recommendation of
Suhakam to repeal the ISA and ends the notorious history of the ISA once and
for all.

announce that it is creating an abstracts index listing of Masters and
PhD theses in the art/science/technology field. Students interested
in contributing should contact leo@mitpress.mit.edu. LEA maintains a
discussion list open only to faculty in the field. Faculty wishing to
join this list should also contact leo@mitpress.mit.edu.
Leonardo Electronic Almanac (LEA) is Leonardo/ISAST and MIT
Press' electronic journal dedicated to providing a forum for
those who are interested in the realm of where art, science, and
technology converge. This peer-reviewed e-journal includes Texts;
Artists using new media; Feature Articles comprised of
theoretical and technical perspectives; the LEA Gallery
exhibiting new media artwork by international artists; detailed
information about new publications in various media; Leonardo
Digital Reviews of publications, events, and exhibitions.
Recent selections include work by Mark Amerika, Linda Carroli,
Choy Kok Kee, Nina Czegledy, Oliver Grau, Teri Hoskin, Patrick
Lambelet, Fatima Lasay, Geert Lovink, William Magee, Robert C.
