This is not a change in the production pipeline - the product was always the same.

The change is in the demand - the herd of independent thinkers is no longer being *paid* for the product (through tenures, foundations, royalties), as that particular venting method became obsolete. There are cheaper ways for social control, and anyway the population has been dumbed down to the level where they don't really get much of it.
