A PROJECT AND AN ACTION |
A PROJECT AND AN ACTION: A CIVIC NETWORK A NET STRIKE by Strano Network CIVIC NETWORK PROJECT The following project consists of the technical aspect of the Civic Network of Florence presented to the municpal government by the Telematic Council of the Metropolitan Area of Florence. The project (originally designed by Strano Network) is made by a theoric part (already presented at the Metaforum II of Budapest) and of a technical part. The FirNet Telematic Council is a network coordinating more than 15 BBS of the metropolitan area of Florence (near the whole of the Florence'sBBS). Such BBS are nodes of several no-profit telematics networks (Cybernet, Peacelink, European Counter Network, Fidonet, OneNet Italia, Toscanet, Immagina) and some of them are sub-domain Internet (but only for e-mail pruposes...). Virtual Town TV (the Strano Network's BBS) represent the host of FirNet. Technical proposal. The proposal of the Florence Civic Network divide itself in five server open 24 hours. 1. Web Server 2. First Class Server 3. Fido like Server 4. FTP Server 5. Nntp Server Thanks to the RCF (Florence Civic Network) server it is possible to create an exchange node from Internet, the Municipal administration and the no profit BBS in the Florence area (amateur networks, associations etc.). In this way may be possible to divulgate in Internet, in bidirectional way, the digital materials (the conferences, messages and files) of the Municipal administration and the BBS in the Florence metropolitan zone. So the RCF will distribute the Internet Newsgroups, the private Internet mail and all the digital material of the Municipal administration. Moreover the RCF will collect in itself all the area files and the local conferences propose from the Florence's BBS. For the realisation of this idea we propose the follow plane: - WEB server (with on-line links) that contains: - Municipal administration area (with the digital materials) - Link area with associations and Florence civic institutions - BBS area. A self-management space where are present the BBS that want to participate to the project (with a size limit for everyone). - Internet information's area - RCF information's area - Users area (users htlm page) - Technical information's area - Miscellaneous area (social and cultural topics) - First Class Server on-line links + gateway) that contains: - Internet private mail - Municipal administration area (with the digital materials) - Link area with associations and Florence civic institutions - Messages and files area from national and international network (Cybernet, Toscanet, Peacelink, ECN, P- Net, Fidonet, OneNet Italia, etc.) - Conferences and Newsgroups messages - BBS area. A self-management space where are present the BBS that want to paparticipateo the project (with a size limit for everyone) - Internet informations area - RCF informations area - Users area (messages and file area with the users on-line self management) - Technical information's area - Miscellaneous area (social and cultural topics) Fido like server (only gateway) that contains: - Internet private mail - Municipal administration area (with the digital materials) - Messages area from associations and Florence civic institutions - Newsgroups messages area - Messages and files area from national and international network (Cybernet, Toscanet, Peacelink, ECN, P- Net, Fidonet, OneNet Italia, etc....) - Local messages area - RCF information's area FTP server (on-line links and gateway) that contains: - Files area from national and international network (Cybernet, Toscanet, Peacelink, ECN, P-Net, Fidonet, OneNet Italia, etc...) - Municipal administration area (with the digital materials) - Files area from associations and Florence civic institutions - Local files area - BBS area. A self-management space where are present the BBS that want to participate to the project (with a size limit for everyone) NNTP server (on-line links at limited access) that contains: - Conferences and Internet Newsgroups messages Hardware configuration: - Router Cisco 2500 series - PowerMac 7100/66, 32 Mb Ram, 2 Giga HD - Backup unity DAT 2 Giga - Ethernet cable - 1 (or more) modem (US Robotics 28.800 baud) - serial port card - 14" monitor - PC 486/dx2, 66 MHz, 16 Mb Ram, 2 Giga HD - Backup unity (DAT) 2 Giga - Ethernet card and cable - 14" monitor - 1 modem (US Robotics 28.800 baud) Software configuration: - First Class 2.6 (no profit BBS licence, 2000 or more users, Windows and CLUI interface, serial card licence, gateway uucp licence) - TCP/IP module for First Class - Aeolus 1.2 - Formula 1 1.8 - Expressnet Fido/lite - Claris works 3.0 or Word - HTTPD (Cern) - Linux Schema grafico: (assente nella versione solo testo) NET'STRIKE First hour 21-12-1995 from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. (France time zone) Enjoy the first global strike in Internet Instructions: - Spread this message everywhere - a) In the date 21/12/1995, 6pm-7pm (day and hour change in relationship to the time zone, look at the list no. 2 at the bottom of the message), link to sites of French Government (look at the list no. 1 or cut and copy the home page of the list no. 3); b) reply said procedure several times for an hour by using intervals of few seconds. A demonstration of 1000, 10.000, 100.000 netusers all together making part of a line crossing French Government's sites. The result of this strike will be to stop for an hour network activities of French Government. BOIKOTT THE FRENCH GOVERNMENT'S INSTITUTIONS!. French Goverment has shown a total contempt for French people, for international community, for common people who just would like to grow up their sons in a better world as it: - goes on with nuclear experiments in Pacific Ocean's islands - goes on with use of nuclear energy as mainly source of "civil" energy - goes on with its projects of "social redrawing" without taking into account the enormous presence of people in recent demonstrations of protest against such kind of policy. These are the reasons that drove us to to take off to french government (for a while...) some of the privileges that every powerful man involved in war-games and exploitation plans like very much: The access to the ever growing important new information media. The same privileges denied to all common people. We will go on with our demonstrations with any means, using all technologies, always respecting the law. Those political fellows which do not take into any account people's needs will understand very soon the real power of new information technologies. This is the first strike that we promote, in the future there will be other ons. It is not possible to know how many Internet's users were on-line but as there were many www french government servers listed in our strike's msg we think several thousands of Internet users have partecipated to the strike ! Strike effects were the above reported: - 5.45 p.m. Quick access to fr servers; - 6.00 p.m. first difficulties to access to fr servers; - 6.15 p.m. it is not possible to access to the Health and to the Educational Ministers' www servers; - 6.30 p.m. Also the servers of the Nuclear Agency, of the French Government and of the Indusrial Ministry decline the access; - 6.45 p.m. The access to the servers of the National Education and of the Health Ministers is denied while the link with other fr servers meets several difficulties; - 7.00 p.m. Only the link with the servers of the Educational and Health servers is denied while the functioning of the other servers is on standard level. Apart from the "on-line" partecipation we have recorded the arrive of several msg of approval to the demonstration from all over the world. The Italian press has shown attention to this kind of strike by publishing several articles (La Nazione, Unita', Repubblica while the left-wing newspaper Manifesto has not published any note on this demonstration!). The strike has been "transmitted" by several Italian "radio" such as Controradio and Radio Popolare and other kinds of local and national information networks has spread news about the strike. Our protest msg developed on 14.12.95 has been spread all over the world after few days showing: - the interest of many people to counteract the French current policy on nuclear and social items; - the willing to be involved in a NET'STRIKE; - the existence of a world-wide movement able to counteract world-wide injustice; - the capacity to develop a such kind of movement in a short time. Finally we outline that: - several users have not set browser preferences in such a way to really link with the server each time (cache memory at 0) and not with its own PC; - it could be possible (for the next time) to build up software oriented to the specific goal to make an "electroni demonstration" at the internal of a www server. As a result of this first net'strike's test we are sure that a strike organized at the internal of internet (with more days to organize the strike, specific software, specific instructions) can be a powerful media to counteract international injustice. We are happy to see how the inter-activity offered by Internet has offered the opportunity to many people to stand-up on the electronic frontier not for business or for show goals but for social global demonstration!
