TOWARDS A DIFFERENT EUROPE June 12 - 17 1997 Amsterdam As the EU's treaty revision process enters its decisive phase, there is decreasing hope that the governments will choose for the fundamental reforms that are necessary to take the European Union out of its current credibility crisis. More than ever it is time to come together across the borders of countries and movements and demand change! The Dutch Coalition for a Different Europe invites you to take part in the alternative summit for a democratic, ecological, social, peaceful and feminist Europe, before and parallel to the Summit of the EU government leaders. PRELIMINARY PROGRAMME The programme of the alternative summit has the following structure: debates and workshops in smaller groups in the morning and the afternoon, and a large debate (1000+ people) in the evening. On some days, there is still space for more workshops. Get in touch with the secretariate of the Dutch Coalition for a Different Europe if you have a proposal. A more detailed programme will be sent to all participants before the event. NB: this programme does not include the exhibitions, cultural events, actions and many other activities which will be part of the alternative summit. ----------------------------------------- THURSDAY 12/6: TOWARDS A DIFFERENT EUROPE ----------------------------------------- Opening Debate: The Democratic Crisis of the European Union With speakers from organisers of previous alternative summits (June 1993 in Copenhagen, December 1995 in Madrid, June 1996 in Florence and December 1996 in Dublin). SPEAK OUT AGAINST RACISM! Intercultural evening (information exchange, social evening) --------------------------------------------------- FRIDAY 13/6: TOWARDS A SOCIAL AND ECOLOGICAL EUROPE --------------------------------------------------- Morning: debates EMU and Social Europe Including: * EMU and the socio-economic impacts for women (Henriette Maas-van de Brink, economist, Netherlands) * The impacts of EMU in Souther Europe (Michel Hussont, Action Contre La Chomage!, France) * Sweden and the end of the welfare state - perspectives for change (Magnus Ryer, economist, Sweden) How Sustainable is the EU? The participation fee will be around 30-40 guilders. This gives access to the evening plenary debates as well as to all other activities during the Alternative Summit as long as there is space. You can reserve your participation in specific activities at the start of the ALternative Summit. LODGING Due to financial and practical constraints, the Dutch Coalition for a Different Europe is not able to offer lodging for the participants of the alternative summit. We can help with is a list of hotels, youth hostels and campings in Amsterdam which you can get in touch with. We recommend everybody to arrange lodging as soon as possible as Amsterdam is going to be extremely full during the period around the EU Summit. For participants who are satisfied with sleeping on the floor, we will try to arrange free lodging in community centres or schools, etc. TRANSPORT Organisations in a number of countries are planning to organise cheap transport to Amsterdam.
