According to Manuel Castells' Rise of the Network Society
(Blackwell 1996), the potential lifelong working hours of the
French have dropped form 113,729 in 1950 to 77,748 in 1985.
Only the USSR was lower.  Extend that drop out another 35 years
to 2020 and the French will be at the 25,000 hour level.  At
1700 hours per year most French folks could finish their work by
age 40 and then go outside and play.
