<nettime> sighs and whispers: on moderation

An idea: A digest system that gives people the first 200 words of a text
with a link to the whole article? I'm not an expert, but it could
probably be done using perl or something like that. If it works, the
diversity is protected.

Mm, my reply is not intended for the whole list, unless you find it
relevant enough, but here's a few remarks anyway:

1. traffic of the last weeks was for a considerable part fed by text
entries for the book, yes? isn't this a storm before a big silence? same
with the announcer: sometimes there's so much traffic that you think you
need to change things or become more strict - but one week later
everything's quiet again. right now there's those dns and serbia
discussions: important stuff, but what will happen in two weeks?
2. a few / some / many texts are forwards/copy&pastes from articles that
appeared elsewhere, on web pages... what if everyone who resends
something, would do the effort to not send the whole text, but just a
short abstract and an url (of web page / posting in mailing list archive)?
if interested, you (cmd-)click, or copy&paste into netscape... and those
who are not deeply interested, or don't have enough time to read through
the whole thing, will more easily get a clue of what the whole
topic/discussion is about when reading those five short lines.
this applies to any text, in fact. about a year ago i heard propositions
about kindly asking people to introduce any text with a short
intro/abstract. wouldn't be bad. shouldn't take too much time. (i guess)
3. in general i'm in favour of measures or agreements that give more
responsibilities to every single subscriber instead of to the moderator -
his/her work should be restricted to a strict minimum, imho. putting text
into a digest makes it less readable, unfortunately. i prefer raw to
pre-chewed or pre-sliced.
4. i would find it a real pity if discussion, short text, experimental and
weird things would disappear on nettime because of too strict moderation
....

this is my personal opinion, and not intended to hurt someone's feelings.
i don't read every text. i never did, in fact i read very few things
thoroughly, no time! but with individual messages (even if i receive 10 or
20 a day) i know which topics are being discussed and how things evolve
anyway; the digests are much less effective for this, and they take about
as much disk space in my mailbox. it's just the overall perception that
changes. why not think about the wild idea of switching to un-moderation,
and for those who are afraid of overload: two or three moderators who make
digests in turn, every two or three days, on a separate list?

fokky
(who believes that mailing lists should self-regulate - and nettime
subscribers are quite intelligent people, no?)

Dear Moderators,

Upon reading your last moderation Mitteilungen, I got in my usual fit of
rage and wanted to flame you down, but Fokky has now put forward precisely
the points I would have wanted to make, but more calmly and elegantly, so
I can only say I entirely concurr with her.

I would only add, for the record, how much I regret the damage this
ill-inspired and even more ill-conducted enterprise of the zkp5 is doing
to the list itself. And how much I fear for its future, after this whole
affair will be behind us. But who am I to speak of us?

a sad greeting from
patrice

BRAVO! It is interesting but it's getting to be too much; if you could
edit out or categorize more, it would be quite a service.

what about having a nettime garbage dump where all messages that don't
make it to the list get dumped. if people want to sift through the trash
for tasty morsels, they can. this way all is not lost. placing documents
not worthy of exposure on the actual nettime list into the garbage dump
could be an automatic process not requiring more work from moderators. the
simplest way might be just to dump everything that comes in (including
messages that actually make it to the nettime list) into the dump. this
way net archeaologists and garbage pickers won't be deprived of a
veritable treasure of digerati trash to collect, sort, and process.

who knows? if you set this up, somebody might publish "The Best of Nettime
Trash" at some point.... :-)
