Jordan Crandalls installatie ‘Drive’ wordt gepresenteerd in TENT te
Rotterdam in samenwerking met V2_Organisatie. Drive gaat over de invloed
van het bewegend beeld op de toeschouwer. Over wat beelden psychologisch
en fysiek bij de beschouwers teweegbrengen. Maar het gaat ook over hoe
beeldtaal zich ontwikkelt en hoe diep deze verbonden is met de
veranderende maatschappij.
Drive is heel bewust ingebed in een historische en politieke context.
Historisch doordat Crandall heel oude filmtechnieken heeft gebruikt (8mm-
en 16 mm-film), maar deze met DVD en de nieuwste software heeft omgezet
in een actueel tijdsbeeld. Politiek omdat Crandall zowel civiel als
militair filmmateriaal heeft gebruikt. Militair ‘footage’ laat een totaal
andere benadering van beweging zien dan ‘gewone’ film. Het registreert
bewegingen niet, maar volgt ze op de voet. In Drive laat Crandall opnames
van spionagecamera’s, satellietbeelden, ‘night vision’ en
hitteregistrerende camera’s versmelten tot een interactie van beweging,
technologie en zelfs erotisch verlangen. Zo levert Drive met een hybride
post-cinematische beeldtaal een bijdrage aan de bestaande
filmgeschiedenis

Jordan Crandalls installation 'Drive' is being presented in TENT in
cooperation with V2_Organisatie. Drive is about the influence of moving
images onto the spectators. About their psychological and physical
impact. But it is also about the development of the cinematographic
language and its deep connection with the changing society. Crandall has
conciously embedded Drive in a historical and political context.
Historical by using old film techniques (Super 8 mm and 16 mm), which he
transformed into a contemporary document by DVD and the latest software.
Political by using civilian and military images. Military footage shows a
very different approach than 'ordinary' film does. It does not register
movements but tracks them. Crandall combines recordings by espionage
cameras, satellites, Night Vision devices and thermal imaging cameras, to
create an interaction of movement, technology and even erotic desire.
This way Drive's hybrid post-cinematic imagery contributes to film
history.
