SP/ Connected! Performance
Een Connected! Performance markeert de boekpresentatie van Making Art of 
Databases bij V2_ in Rotterdam. Onder het motto 'Listen, Send, Tell', 
worden SMS teksten van het publiek in Rotterdam geintegreerd in een live 
online performance met Michelle Teran in Rotterdam, Rupert Huber 
(Radiotopia) uit Linz (Oostenrijk) en Isabelle Jenniches in New York. 
Omgevingsgeluiden vormen de aanleiding voor interventies in geluid en beeld 
met gebruikmaking van KeyWorx.
Sher Doruff is een van de vier docenten die een lezing geeft over haar 
Masterclass ervaringen tijdens DEAF03 (over interdisciplinariteit) en het 
artikel wat ze daarover schreef in de bundel Making Art of Databases.
De publicatie Marking Art of Databases is verkrijgbaar in de boekhandel of 
via V2_publishing, en kost Euro 17,50

SP/Connected! Residency: Mark Meadows
Mark Meadows is een Amerikaanse ontwerper, schilder en schrijver. 
Recentelijk was bij als Creative Director betrokken bij een onderneming van 
Stanford University. Daarvoor deed hij als artist in residence bij Xerox 
Parc research naar lezen en interactiviteit. Hij publiceerde over datgene 
wat hij onderzoekt in zijn 3D animaties en interactieve ontwerpen: de 
integratie van technologie, narrativiteit en beeldende kunst.
Begin juli begint Mark Meadows een drie maanden durende residency bij Waag 
Society. In deze periode werkt hij aan zijn project 'St Elmo' en is 
sparring partner voor projecten van Waag Society waarin intelligente 
systemen, gebruikersanticipatie, patroonherkenning en narratieve principes 
een rol spelen.

SP/Connected! Lecture: Tobi Schneidler
Tobi Schneidler is als architect verbonden aan het Interactive Institute in 
Stockholm. Voorbeelden van zijn werk over 'omgevingen met gemengde 
realiteiten', zijn regelmatig te zien op diverse festivals en in musea. Het 
betreft projecten waarin architectuur wordt gecombineerd met 
omgevingsgebonden media en interactie technologie. In het Connected! 
Programma geeft Tobi Schneidler een lezing over zijn projecten. Een recent 
voorbeeld daarvan is het 'Refashion Lab', een speculatief prototype voor 
een kledingwinkel waarin bezoekers een tastbare digitale belevenis wordt 
geboden.

PR/Lockpicking workhops online
'Lockpicking' is het openen van sloten zonder deze te beschadigen of een 
sleutel te gebruiken. De 'lockpickers' (je zou ze ook 'sloten hackers' 
kunnen noemen) beschouwen hun activiteit als een sport, en beoefenen deze 
in clubverband. In Europa bestaan twee 'lockpickers' verenigingen , een in 
Duitsland en een in Nederland. De Nederlandse club , Toool, bestaat uit 
zeventig leden. De video's van twee workshops van Toool zijn nu voor het 
eerst on line beschikbaar, via Waag Connect, de publieke website voor 
experimentele culturele projecten die zeer hoge bandbreedte behoeven.
Reuters schreef nav de workshops: Lockpickers en safecrackers delen de 
fascinatie van computerhackers: het aantonen van veiligheidsrisico's.
Eerder zette Waag Connect de documentaire 'Hippies from Hell' online, 
waarin Ine Poppe uitgebreid aandacht besteed aan de slotenhackers.

IA/ Amsterdam Realtime in Rotterdam
Stadsbewoners die uitgerust werden met een GPS tracer, maakten hun sporen 
door de stad zichtbaar in het project Amsterdam Realtime. Tot 7 juli is het 
project Amsterdam Realtime te zien in het Mob_lab van de Architectuur 
Biennale Rotterdam. In het Mob_LAb wordt een inventarisatie getoond van de 
projecten van architecten, filmmakers, kunstenaars en fotografen over 
mobiliteit. Het Mob_Lab is te vinden in Las Palmas.

Communicatieomgeving Ouderen
Met de Verhalentafel heeft Waag Society ervaring opgedaan met het 
ontwikkelen van een interface waarmee hoogbejaarde gebruikers toegang 
krijgen tot nieuwe media en daar zelf actief aan kunnen bijdragen. Eerder 
al ontwikkelde Waag Society PILOOT, een communicatieomgeving voor mensen 
met een verstandelijke beperking. Met Piloot zijn interface-principes 
vastgesteld om op een laagdrempelige manier digitale 
communicatie-faciliteiten beschikbaar te stellen. In opdracht van de 
Amsterdamse proeftuin voor experimenten met breedbandige maatschappelijke 
ICTdiensten, Cyburg, zijn de bevindingen met de Verhalentafel en PILOOT 
gecombineerd en uitgebreid met specifieker behoeften- en 
gebruikersonderzoek naar de oudere doelgroep. Aldus is een serie 
aanbevelingen opgesteld voor een digitale communicatieomgeving voor 
ouderen. In juli zal Waag Society dit rapport aanbieden aan Cyburg.

Hosting
Hoepelen in de woestijn
In de Black Rock woestijn van Nevada wordt sinds het midden van de jaren 
negentig het 'meest alternatieve evenement ter wereld' gehouden: het 
Burning Man Festival. De Atlantis groep organiseert hier jaarlijks de 
Burning Man Opera, waarin het publiek kennnismaakt met o.a. Balinese 
Apenzang, boventoonzingen uit Tuva (Rusland) en de hoelahoep.
Op 12 juni geeft de Atlantis groep een impressie van het omvangrijke 
evenement in het Theatrum Anatomicum.

De oermens van de Oude Schans
Kunstenaar Onno, de 'Oermens van de Oude Schans', vond zelfs in China niet 
de ruimte die hij zocht. Zijn in memoriam is te lezen in het maandblad 
Opnieuw, net als een tirade in versvorm tegen de oorlog in Irak, de 
geschiedenis van de Aprilfeesten en wat er intussen gebeurt in Cafe Gebed 
zonder End.
Waag Society heeft in het kader van de ondersteuning van diverse 
activiteiten op en rond de Nieuwmarkt, een website gemaakt voor Opnieuw. 
Vanaf 1 juli is het mogelijk om het blad online te lezen en oude edities in 
te zien.

SP/Connected! Performance
A Connected! Performance will mark the book launch of Making Art of 
Databases at V2_ in Rotterdam. Under the slogan 'Listen, Send, Tell', sms 
messages of the Rotterdam audience will be included in a live online 
performance with Michelle Teran in Rotterdam, Rupert Huber (Radiotopia) in 
Linz (Austria) and Isabelle Jenniches in New York. Sounds from the various 
locations form the basis of interventions in sound and images with the use 
of KeyWorx.
Sher Doruff is one of the four teachers who will give a short lecture on 
their Masterclass experiences at DEAF03 (on interdisciplinarity) and the 
resulting article in Making Art of Databases.
The book Making Art of Databases is available from bookshops or at V2_ 
publishing, at 17,50 Euro.

SP/Connected! Mark Meadows
Mark Meadows is an American born designer, painter and writer. Recently he 
worked at Stanford University as Creative Director of one of their 
ventures. Earlier, as artist in residence with Xerox Parc, he researched 
the possibilities of reading and interactivitiy. He published two books on 
the core theme of his research into 3D animation and interactive design: 
the integration of technology, narrativity and visual arts.
 From July to October Mark Meadows will be artist in residence with Waag 
Society. In this three month period he will work on his 'St Elmo' project. 
Also, he will act as a sparring partner for projects of Waag Society in 
which intelligent systems, user anticipation, pattern recognition and 
narrative principles play a part.

SP/Connected! Lecture: Tobi Schneidler
Tobi Schneidler is an architect connected to the Interactive Institute of 
Stockholm. His work is exhibited regularly at festivals and in museums. Its 
core theme is 'mixed reality environments'. It concerns projects in which 
architecture converges with site specific media and interactive 
technologies. In the Connected! Programme Tobi Schneidler will lecture on 
his projects. A recent example is the 'Refashion Lab', a speculative 
prototype for a fashion shop in which the visitor is offered a tangible 
digital experience.

PR/Lock hackers workshops online
Opening locks without a key and without damaging is called 'Lockpicking'. 
The 'lockpickers' (who could be called 'lock hackers', consider themselves 
sportsmen and play lockpicking in sports clubs.
In Europe two 'lockpicking' clubs exist, one in Germany and one in the 
Netherlands. The Dutch Toool club has seventy members.The videos of two 
workshops given by Toool in New York are now available online at Waag 
Connect, the public site for experimental cultural projects needing very 
high bandwidth.
Reuters commented on the Toools workshops: Lockpickers and safecrackers 
share with computer hackers a common fascination with exposing security 
'vulnerabilities'.
Earlier the documentary 'Hippies from Hell' by Ine Poppe was made available 
at Waag Connect. In this film, Ine Poppe reports extensively on the lock 
hackers.

IA/Amsterdam Realtime in Rotterdam
Selected citizens of Amsterdam made their routes through town visible by 
carrying a GPS tracer with them for a week in the Amsterdam Realtime 
project. The results of these accumulating traces can be seen in the 
Mob_Lab of the International Architecture Biennale in Rotterdam. In the 
Mob_Lab an overview of the projects of architects, filmmakers, artists and 
photographers about 'mobility' is shown. The Mob_Lab is situated in Las Palmas.

Online communications environment for elderly people
In the Storytelling Table project Waag Society gained experience in 
developing an interface with which elderly users get access to new media 
and contribute to them themselves. Previously Waag Society developed 
PILOOT, a communications environment for people with a mental disability. 
With PILOOT interface principles of making digital communications 
facilities available in a low-key manner have been established. 
Commissioned by Cyburg, the broadband testbed for experiments with social 
ICT services, the findings of the Storytelling Table and PILOOT have been 
combined and expanded on with more specific user and demand research into 
the target group of elderly people. Thus a series of recommendations on a 
digital communications environment for elderly people have been made. In 
July this report will be offered to Cyburg.

Hulahoop in the desert
In the Nevada Black Rock desert 'the most alternative gathering in the 
world' is being staged each summer since the mid-nineties: the Burning Man 
Festival'. Each year the Atlantis group organises the Burning Man Opera as 
part of the events. In the rehearsals for the performance, participants are 
taught Balinese Monkey Chant, Tuvan Throatsinging and the hulahoop.
On 12 June the Atlantis Group will give an impression of this massive event 
in the Theatrum Anatomicum of the Waag.

Primitive man from the Oude Schans
Eve n in China artist Onno, the 'primitive man from the Oude Schans', 
couldn't find the space he needed. His obituary is published in the monthly 
Opnieuw magazine. This magazine for the Nieuwmarkt neighbourhood also 
publishes tirades against the war in Irak, articles on the history of the 
April festivities and what is happening in the mean time in cafe Gebed 
zonder End (Neverending Prayer). In the context of the support Waag Society 
offers to activities on and around the Nieuwmarkt, a website has been built 
for Op nieuw. From 1 July it is thus possible to read the current magazine 
and search the archive online.
