[Nettime-nl] fototentoonstelling "10 jaar democratie in Zuid-Afrika"- Foto's Greg Marinovich - Gent - 20 april tot 19 mei 2004

De Universiteit Gent is vereerd in het kader van een universitair 
ontwikkelingssamenwerkingsproject van Prof. Jan Blommaert, en op initiatief 
van de Afrika-vereniging van de Universiteit Gent (AVRUG) de fotograaf Greg 
Marinovich te mogen ontvangen. Prof. Blommaert is voorzitter van de AVRUG 
en tevens coördinator van de onlangs gestarte samenwerking tussen de 
Universiteit Gent en de University of Western Cape, gefinancierd door de VLIR.

Greg Marinovich, geboren in Zuid-Afrika op 12 december 1962, is de 
co-auteur van de bestseller "The Bang Bang Club" en als fotograaf winnaar 
van de Pulitzer Prijs. Gedurende 15 jaar is hij bezig geweest met 
conflictverslaggeving, documentaires en nieuwsjournalistiek overal ter 
wereld. Zijn stijl wordt gekenmerkt door een onthutsende intimiteit, terug 
te vinden in zijn documentaire fotografie en films vanaf 1998.

De fototentoonstelling "10 jaar democratie in Zuid-Afrika" wordt 
georganiseerd in de Universiteitsbibliotheek, Rozier 9 in Gent en loopt van 
20 april tot 19 mei 2004.

Op woensdag 21 april 2004 geeft dhr. Marinovich een lezing gevolgd door een 
debat met de studenten van de Universiteit Gent. Deze lezing vindt plaats 
om 14u00 in Het Pand, Onderbergen 1, Gent. U bent van harte welkom op dit 
initiatief


The European viewpoint on Africa derives ever so often from certain 
interests and is yet ever so much on how Europe sees itself and its 
relationship between itself and Africa.
This exhibition is no exception to the above.
It is our intention with this event to describe our own relationship with 
the actualities and realities of Africa.

The reconstruction of a new and just society in South Africa, as depicted 
and documented so brilliantly and concise in the photographs of Greg 
Marinovich,  is also our problem and concern.
Moreover, this exhibition also marks two rather important and memorable 
events, namely the ten year anniversary of the new democratic South Africa 
and the thirtieth year since the Africa Association of the University of 
Ghent was established.

In addition and in conclusion, this exhibition hopefully also marks the 
start of a fruitful cooperation between the University of Ghent (UG) and 
the University of the Western Cape (UWC).
Such a cooperation would in fact have the aim to contribute to the 
advancement of the new South Africa.
Together, in retrospect, we view on the unjust practices of the past, but 
our vision also focuses  with hope towards a better future for all.
