[Nettime-nl] OPEN DOORS project challenge |
OPEN DOORS project challenge - by Doors of Perception and Virtueel Platform HOSTING: the design of platforms for social innovation What does it mean to design a platform for social innovation? To find out, Doors of Perception has teamed up with its colleagues in Virtual Platform, the Dutch project broker for new media research organizations, to organize an Open Doors Project Challenge on 19 November 2004. 25 design teams will be invited to pitch their project to a jury of their peers. The best projects will be invited to Doors of Perception 8 in New Delhi in March 2005. Open Doors also enables design researchers to share knowledge and experience on content and business issues. What is a platform for social innovation? A platform for social innovation is something that enables people to organise daily life activities in new ways. The platform might be an infrastructure (such as WiFi), a device (such as a handheld, or wearable) or a software application (such as a car-pooling system, or a barter system). A platform might also be the interface to, or interaction with, a combination of the above elements. A platform for social innovation will probably be supported by technology, but this is not a requirement. Doors of Perception 8: New Delhi The best projects from Open Doors will be invited to present at Doors of Perception 8 in New Delhi, India, during the week 21-26 March 2005. Designers and entrepreneurs from different parts of the world will discuss platforms for social innovation, and how to design them. Doors of Perception Doors of Perception (Doors) is an international conference and knowledge network which sets new agendas for design - in particular, the design agenda for information and communication technologies (ICTs). E-culture fair The best projects from open Doors will also be invited to participate in the E-culture fair, which next takes place in Amsterdam in Spring 2006. This event brings together international research projects that cross the boundaries between culture, industry, education and science. State of the art work in the field of new media is showcased in projects which combine installation, performance and presentation: demos of alternative approaches to ways of living, communicating, learning and working. The emphasis is on hands-on activities, and the visitors to the Fair are challenged to test out the prototypes on offer. Virtual Platform The E-Culture Fair is organized by the Virtual Platform, a network organization based in Amsterdam with four years' experience in investigating new media and culture, advising policy makers, and bringing about exchange and co-operation between the cultural sector and other players in the ICT field. The Virtual Platform draws on close collaboration with leading cultural new media organizations in the Netherlands and Europe. The Virtual Platform partners are: the Balie, Steim, Doors of Perception, Nederlands Instituut voor Mediakunst-Montevideo/Time Based Arts, Paradiso, Submarine, V2, and Waag Society.
