Graag wil ik je aandacht vragen voor een aantal evenementen.

Zaterdag 14 augustus 12.00-23.00 uur
de Beleving in festival de Beschaving
met Spinvis, Rosa Ensemble met Hans Dagelet, Eboman en Tetzepi
Europaweg, De Meern / Leidsche Rijn
Stichting Barooni presenteert in 2004 vier 
manifestaties met avontuurlijke muziek in 
Leidsche Rijn, een nieuwe wijk in Utrecht, waar 
over 10 jaar waarschijnlijk 80.000 mensen zullen 
wonen.
In festival de Beschaving presenteert Barooni een 
programma in de tent de Beleving. Het 14-koppige 
bigtet Tetzepi speelt een combinatie van jazz, 
wereldmuziek en gecomponeerde muziek (15.00 uur). 
Het Rosa Ensemble en Hans Dagelet spelen het 
programma 'Selling Hoovers in Mojave' dat gewijd 
is aan de tegendraadse muzikale vernieuwer 
Captain Beefheart (20.00 uur). Spinvis schreef 
een speciaal programma, 'de ogen van de bruid', 
met nieuwe muziek en poëzie voor spreekstemmen, 
tape-echo, vibrafoon, harp, drums en klassieke 
ensemble (21.00 uur). In zijn DVJ-set koppelt de 
multimedia-artiest Eboman drum & bass muziek aan 
verknipte videoclips van MTV-sterren, van Alicia 
Keys tot David Bowie.

Merlijn Twaalfhoven 'parkproject'
"suite voor kruiwagens, pedaalemmer en orkest"
Mauritspark De Meern / Leidsche Rijn
De componist Merlijn Twaalfhoven heeft in de 
afgelopen jaren van zich doen spreken als één van 
Nederlands meest geruchtmakende componisten van 
hedendaagse muziek. In het Mauritspark in 
Leidsche Rijn zal Twaalfhoven een orkest 
samenstellen van amateur-musici op alle mogelijke 
instrumenten.

Daniel Landau 'The Worlds of Milosh: Welcome to Grid City'
Lowlands Festival, Biddinghuizen
De muziektheatervoorstelling 'The Worlds of 
Milosh: Welcome to Grid City' van Daniel Landau, 
een Huis a/d Werf co-productie, zal op 22 
augustus op het Lowlands festival te zien zijn. 
In juni werd 'The Worlds of Milosh: Welcome to 
Grid City' met sukses in het Bath international 
music festival uitgevoerd. Landau's Orkest de 
Shabab voerde de voorstelling 'Channel Shabab' in 
het Bartok Festival in Hongarije uit.

Donderdag 26 augustus 20.30
Peter Sinclair en GH Hovagimyan 'Rant' en anderen
STEIM, Utrechtsedwarsstraat 134, Amsterdam
Voor Peter Sinclair's performance 'Rant' 
(schelden, tieren) is een interactief 
computerprogramma gemaakt, waarmee je gesproken 
commando's kunt samplen en manipuleren. Het 
resultaat wordt direct verwerkt in de audiomix. 
GH Hovagimyan projecteert daarbij de waanbeelden 
van een borderline-patient die het verschil niet 
meer kan zien tussen nieuws, roddels of 
geruchten. In een door techno gedreven woord- en 
gedichtmassa worden de uitspraken van een 
waanzinnige dakloze getoond. Tevens zal er nog 
een tweede concert zijn op deze eerste avond van 
STEIM's concertserie in het nieuwe seizoen.

Thomas Köner 'Banlieue du Vide'
Ars Electronica festival, Linz, Oostenrijk
Thomas Köner heeft me zijn multimediawerk 
'Banlieue du Vide' de Prix Ars Electronica 2004 
in de categorie Digital Musics gewonnen. Köner's 
eerste vier CD's, Nunatak Gonagmur', 'Teimo', 
'Permafrost' en 'Aubrite' zijn door Barooni 
uitgegeven. Köner kan gezien worden als een grote 
muzikale vernieuwer, wiens werk op de grens van 
elektronische muziek en beeldende kunst ligt.
'Banlieue du Vide': 3000 beelden van surveillance 
camera's tonen lege, besneeuwde straten begeleid 
door verkeers- en omgevingsgeluid. De enige 
beweging die gezien kan worden, is de dichtheid 
van de sneeuw, waardoor er een gevoel van 
tijdloosheid ontstaat.

The Night of the Unexpected
Met De Volharding met Tatiana Koleva (percussie) 
en Eboman (video) "Workers Union" van Louis 
Andriessen, Cosmos, Conlon Nancarrow player piano 
studies, "Hoketus" van Louis Andriessen, Anne 
Faulborn, Keiji Haino, David Toop, Edwin van der 
Heide, Erik M, Huba de Graaff, Erik Ward 
Geerlings, Marien Jongewaard, Dat Politics en 
Thomas Brinkmann
Paradiso, Amsterdam
Ieder jaar organiseert stichting Gaudeamus de 
internationale Gaudeamus Muziekweek, waarin het 
werk van jonge, internationale componisten wordt 
uitgevoerd. In het kader van deze week, en in 
samenwerking met STEIM en Paradiso, vindt dit 
jaar ook een festival plaats van één nacht: The 
Night of the Unexpected. Hierin staat de 
verscheidenheid en dynamiek centraal die de 
huidige ontwikkeling van de nieuwe muziek 
kenmerkt.
Over het programma van the Night of the 
Unexpected zal ik je over enkele weken meer 
informatie sturen.

Graag wil ik de kans aangrijpen ook nog iets te 
schrijven over de meest interessante projecten in 
de afgelopen periode waar ik bij betrokken ben 
geweest.

Yannis Kyriakides 'The Buffer Zone'
Met Yannis Kyriakides, André Gingras, HC Gilje, 
Tido Visser, Nikos Veliotis, Marc Reichow, Marko 
Ciciliani.
De componist Yannis Kyriakides presenteerde de 
elektronische muziektheater productie 'The Buffer 
Zone' in het Festival a/d Werf. 'The Buffer Zone' 
verwijst naar een gedemilitariseerde grenszone. 
Elektronische en akoestische muziek, stem, 
beweging en video zijn onderdelen van de 
performance. Deze multimedia productie, die tot 
stand kwam i.s.m. productiehuis Huis a/d Werf, 
zal in de komende tijd gaan touren.

Serralves Museum, Porto met Scanner en Mouse on Mars
Voor het vijfjarig bestaan van het Serralves 
Museum voor hedendaagse muziek in Porto heb ik 
een programma samengesteld met de multimedia 
performance '52 Spaces' van Scanner en Mouse on 
Mars met video kunstenaar Rosa Barba. De zeer 
ingetogen performance van Scanner, met beelden 
uit 'l'eclisse' van filmmaker Michelangelo 
Antionioni, en de wilde, experimentele techno van 
Mouse on Mars waren het perfekte sluitstuk van 
het jubileum, dat 43.000 mensen naar het museum 
trok.

Solex & het Maarten Altena Ensemble '1+1=11'
'1+1=11' is een samenwerkings project van de 
Amsterdamse sample muzikante Liesbeth Esselink, 
die werkt onder naam Solex en het Maarten Altena 
Ensemble. Een aantal Solex liedjes zijn door 
Maarten Altena gearrangeerd voor het Ensemble. 
Maar ook heeft Solex een nieuw stuk gemaakt 
waarbij ze uitsluitend samples van het Maarten 
Altena Ensemble heeft gebruikt. Deze 
gestruktureerde verzameling van instrumentale 
deeltjes is door Maarten Altena voor zijn 
Ensemble terug georkestreerd. '1 + 1 = 11' is een 
eigenzinnige, directe vorm van hergebruik en 
creatie, met als resultaat de hoorbare dynamiek 
tussen levende noten en bevroren 
geluidsmateriaal. '1+1=11' is een Huis a/d Werf 
co-productie i.s.m. het Maarten Altena Ensemble.

STEIM Touch tentoonstelling, workshops en concerten
Making New Waves festival, Budapest, Hongarije
In februari heeft STEIM een uitgebreide 
presentatie gedaan in het Making New Waves 
festival in Budapest. De Touch tentoonstelling 
met aanraakbare elektronische geluidsobjecten 
"voor een publiek van 3 tot 103" werd getoond. 
Voorts was er een intensief workshop programma 
met o.a. 'Ensemble' van Kristina Andersen en een 
concert van Michel Waisvisz.

Dear reader

I'd like to ask your attention for a couple of 
events that will be taking place soon.

Saturday August 14, 12.00-23.00 hours
de Beleving in festival de Beschaving

Europaweg, De Meern / Leidsche Rijn
Barooni presents four manifestations in 2004 with 
adventurous music in Leidsche Rijn, a new area in 
Utrecht where within 10 years time about 80.000 
people will be living.
In festival de Beschaving Barooni presents a 
programme in a tent, that's called de Beleving. 
The 14 piece 'bigtet' Tetzepi will be performing 
their mix of avantjazz, world music and composed 
music. The Rosa Ensemble with Hans Dagelet will 
be presenting 'Selling Hoovers in Mojave', which 
is dedicated to Captain Beefheart. Spinvis wrote 
a special programme, 'the eyes of the bride', 
with new music and poetry for speaking voices, 
tape-echo, mallet instruments, harp, drums and 
ensemble. In his DVJ-set multi-media artist 
Eboman creates a mix of drum n bass music and 
cut-up video clips of well known artists such as 
Alicia Keys and Missy Elliott.

In recent years the composer Merlijn Twaalfhoven 
has been one of the most energetic persons in 
Dutch contemporary music. In his work he uses 
both amateur musicians as professional 
performers, makes use of the spacial 
possibilities of the venue in an unconventional 
way and mixes all sorts of styles of music in his 
events. Barooni presents his 'Parkproject', for 
which he will work with a group of amateur 
musicians and children and do a public 
presentation in a park of a new composition.

Daniel Landau 'The Worlds of Milosh: Welcome to Grid City'
Lowlands Festival, Biddinghuizen, the Netherlands
The music theatre performance 'The Worlds of 
Milosh: Welcome to Grid City' of Daniel Landau, a 
Huis a/d Werf co-production, will be performed at 
the Lowlands festival in the Netherlands. In June 
'The Worlds of Milosh: Welcome to Grid City' was 
performed with considerable success at the Bath 
international music festival. Orkest the Shabab 
performed Landau's 'Channel Shabab' in the Bartok 
Festival in Hongary.

Peter Sinclair and GH Hovagimyan 'Rant' and others

For Peter Sinclairs performance 'Rant' an 
interactive computer programme has been 
developed, in which spokend commands can be 
sampled and manipulated. The result will be 
immediately used in the sound mix. GH Hovagimyan 
will project delusionary images of borderline 
patients, who don't see the difference between 
news, gossip and rumours. In a techno driven word 
and sound mass the images of a homeless patient 
will be projected. Additionally there will be a 
second concert in this event, being the first 
STEIM concert in the new season.

Thomas Köner 'Banlieue du Vide'
Ars Electronica festival, Linz, Oostenrijk
With his multimedia work 'Banlieue du Vide' 
Thomas Köner has won the Prix Ars Electronica 
2004 in the category of Digital Musics. Köner's 
first four CD's, Nunatak Gonagmur', 'Teimo', 
'Permafrost' and 'Aubrite' have been released by 
Barooni. Köner has shown to be a highly creative 
artist, whose work is on the border of electronic 
music and visual arts.
'Banlieue du Vide': 3000 images from surveillance 
cameras showing empty, snow-covered streets and 
accompanied by traffic sounds and colorless 
ambient noise. The only movement is of the 
changing accumulations of snow-emergence and 
disappearance in, as it were, timeless fashion.

The Night of the Unexpected

Every year, the Gaudeamus Foundation organises 
the international Gaudeamus Music Week, in which 
the work of young international artists is 
presented. In the framework of this week, and in 
collaboration with STEIM and Paradiso, a festival 
of one night is presented: the Night of the 
Unexpected. This festival focuses on the 
diversity and dynamics of new music.

Lastly, I'd like to take the opportunity to write 
a little bit about some of the most exciting 
projects that I have been involved with in the 
past months.

Yannis Kyriakides 'the Buffer Zone'
With Yannis Kyriakides, André Gingras, HC Gilje, 
Tido Visser, Nikos Veliotis, Marc Reichow, Marko 
Ciciliani.
Composer yannis Kyriakides presented the 
electronic music theatre production 'The Buffer 
Zone' in the Festival a/d Werf. 'The Buffer Zone' 
refers to a demilitarised zone. Electronic and 
acoustic music, voice, movement and video are the 
most essential elements of the piece. The 
multimedia production, which was made in 
production center Huis a/d Werf, will be touring 
in the near future.

Serralves Museum, Porto with Scanner en Mouse on Mars
For the five year jubilee of the Serralves Museum 
of Modern Art in Porto I have curated a programme 
with multimedia performances of Scanner and Mouse 
on Mars. The very intruiging performance of 
Scanner's '52 spaces', with images of 
Michelangelo Anonioni's 'The Eclipse' and the 
wild, experimental techno of Mouse on Mars with 
video artist Rosa Barba was a perfect ending of 
the museum's open weekend, which attracted 43.000 
people.

Solex & het Maarten Altena Ensemble '1+1=11'
'1+1=11' is a collaborative project of Amsterdam 
based sample artist Liesbeth Esselink who 
operates under the name of Solex and the Maarten 
Altena Ensemble. A number of Solex songs have 
been arranged by maarten Altena for his ensemble. 
And Solex composed a 20-minute piece, in which 
she uses exclusively samples from the Maarten 
Altena Ensemble. This structured collection of 
musical elements was then orchestrated for the 
Maarten Altena Ensemble. '1+1=11' is a direct 
form of recycling and creation with as a result 
the dynamics between 'living' notes and frozen 
sound material. '1+1=11' is a Huis a/d Werf 
co-production with the Maarten Altena Ensemble.

STEIM Touch exhibition, workshops and concerts
Making New Waves festival, Budapest, Hongary
In February STEIM did a big presentation in the 
Making New Waves festival in Budapest. The Touch 
exhibition with electronic sound objects "for an 
audience from 3 to 103" was set up. Also there 
was an intensive workshop programme with a.o. 
'Ensemble' of Kristina Andersen and a concert by 
Michel Waisvisz.
