STEIM presenteert dinsdag 15 maart in het kader van de No Backup 
concertserie om 20.30 uur een concert met Nathan Michel en Gustav

Nathan Michel
Nathan Michel is een componist, multi-instrumentalist en producer die 
onconventionele, avontuurlijke muziek maakt. Zijn muziek klinkt op een 
prettige manier bekend, tegelijkertijd is zij gedrenkt in een 
ontwapenende, vreemde atmosfeer. Op zijn vorige twee CD’s voor 
Tigerbeat6 worden instrumenten gecombineerd met lo-fi elektronica. Zijn 
meest recente CD, The Beast, uitgebracht op Sonig/Skipp, wordt 
gekenmerkt door kleurrijke, organische muzikale structuren, luchtige 
harmonieën en sterke liedjes, waarbij slechts een vleugje elektronica 
aan te pas is gekomen.
Nathan Michel studeerde op Princeton University, Bowdoin College en 
Yale en verbleef in Amsterdam om bij Louis Andriessen te studeren.

Gustav
Achter de naam Gustav gaat een vrouw schuil, Eva Jantschitsch. Haar CD 
“Rettet die Wale” laat elektropop horen met charmant en provocatief 
gezongen teksten. Gustav neemt echter stelling aan links-radicale 
zijde. Haar liedjes handelen over staatsrepressie, excessief 
kapitalisme en globalisering. En vanzelfsprekend ontbreekt ook een 
stellingname ten aanzien van de oorlog in Irak niet. Maar in de toon is 
ook ironie en melancholie te bespeuren. Alhoewel de uit Wenen 
afkomstige Jantschitsch zich hier en daar heeft laten bijstaan door 
bijvoorbeeld Radian, speelt ze de meeste instrumenten (viool, 
accordeon, gitaar, xylofoon, piano, fluit, elektronica) zelf. Haar 
muziek wordt vaak als elektropop getypeerd, toch is zij eigenlijk te 
veelzijdig daarvoor. Zij klinkt eerder als een kritische versie van 
2raumwohnung of de scissor sisters. Als het om elektronische muziek 
gaat, zegt Jantschitsch beïnvloed te zijn door bijvoorbeeld Laurie 
Anderson, Brian Eno en Robert Wyatt.

On Tuesday March 15 at 20.30h STEIM presents a No Backup concert with 
Nathan Michel and Gustav

Nathan Michel
Nathan Michel is a composer, multi-instrumentalist, and producer making 
quirky, adventurous music that is as comfortingly familiar as it is 
disarmingly strange. His previous two albums for Tigerbeat6 Records—abc 
def (2002) and Dear Bicycle (2003) combine instruments with lo-fi 
electronics, while his newest record, The Beast (out on the german 
sonig label in April), offers colorful, organic instrumental textures, 
lush harmonies, and skillful song-writing with only a touch of 
electronics.
Currently a Ph.D. composition fellow at Princeton University, Nathan 
Michel has studied music at Bowdoin College, Yale University, and in 
Amsterdam with Louis Andriessen.

Gustav
Behind the name Gustav a woman can be found, Eva Jantschitsch. Her CD 
“Rettet die Wale” contains electropop with vocals, sung in a charming 
and provocative way. Gustav positions herself in the more radical left 
wing. Her songs deal with state repression, excessive capitalism and 
globalisation. And obviously a position towards the war in Irak is 
included. But in the tone one can often hear a bit of irony or 
melancholy. Though the Vienna Based Jantschisch had some support from 
artists like Radian, she’s played most of the instruments herself 
(violin, accordeon, guitar, xylophone, piano, flute, alphorn, 
electronica). Her music is often described as electropop, but it is 
actually too diverse for that. She sounds more like a critical version 
of for instance 2raumwohnung or the scissor sisters. As for electronic 
music, Jantschitsch herself says she’s been influenced by artists like 
Laurie Anderson, Brian Eno and Robert Wyatt.
