`Signs´
A presentation by Meta Haven: Design Research
Date: Tuesday, 3 July 2007
Location: SMART Project Space
Time: 20.00 - 22.00
Meta Haven: Design Research is an Amsterdam-based collective. Its
current members are Vinca Kruk, Daniël van der Velden and Gon Zifroni.
The collective’s research results in models, proposals, essays,
lectures, conferences and publications. Meta Haven’s first project was
in 2003-2004, and consisted of research into a corporate identity for
the Principality of Sealand, a tiny nation state located on a former
war platform in the North Sea. This project centered around the
pro-active engagement with a non-commissioning subject, coming to terms
with myth and symbolism, territorial identity and its dissolution into
information networks. Since, Meta Haven is investigating an array of
case studies where the linkage between visual imagination and the
political is key. The ´History vs. Future´ project, focusing on the
relationship between identity and history, is resulting in a research
of the architectural remains of Cold War communist regimes, notably the
Casa Poporului in Bucharest, under the banner of ´The Museum of
Conflict´. Meta Haven’s latest publication is a free newspaper
addressing the future of the monument, edited together with Mihnea
Mircan as a contribution to the 52nd Venice Biennial. Meta Haven:
Design Research is currently preparing a book, ´Uncorporate Identity´,
scheduled for publication in 2008 with Lars Müller Publishers.

For `A Number of Worlds Resembling Our Own´, the current exhibition at
SPS, Meta Haven has created ´Models for the Political´, a series of 30
inkjet prints in which the interconnection between architecture,
iconography and the political is explored. Among the prints are models,
chessboards, newspapers, posters, stamps, grids and other proposals
that attempt to formulate a reflection on the twisted state of symbolic
power today.
