[Nettime-nl] BALTAN hosts international expert meeting on the future of arts laboratories

From November 30th until December 2nd, BALTAN Laboratories is hosting an international expert meeting titled The Future of the Lab at its lab at Strijp-S in Eindhoven. These three days bring together 35 participants from media art labs and lab programmes worldwide - from Australia to Chile, to the Netherlands and Switzerland - to challenge and debate future strategies and forms of the laboratory (or media lab) and the importance of research and production spaces for artists and creative professionals working with technology.

The Future of the Lab opens up to the public on the night of Monday, November 30th, with a keynote lecture by Horst Hörtner, director of the world-renowned Ars Electronica Futurelab in Austria. The evening will also feature some of the projects developed at BALTAN over the last year, including work by Maurer United Architects, Geert Mul, Telcosystems and Michelle Teran.

The opening will be followed by two days of intensive working meetings with the international and Dutch participants, exploring issues such as the history of the lab, interdisciplinary collaboration, openness, and new strategies for the future. The last afternoon (December 2nd) brings additional participants into the discussion from industry, academic institutions and the wider cultural sector, encouraging new possibilities for connections, knowledge sharing and debate.

The expert meeting is part of BALTAN’s Blueprint programme, devoted to exploring the forms, roles and models of the art and technology lab of the future. Eindhoven and Strijp-S provide a distinct location and context for this type of initiative and this meeting will contribute both to the international debate as well as to the plans for the local development of a broader art, science and technology lab in Eindhoven, intended to be located in the NatLab at Strijp-S (former Philips physics laboratory).

More information on the participants as well as the results of The Future of the Lab will be shared on the BALTAN website.
