Feral Trade is a public experiment in trading goods along social networks. The
first feral trade took place in 2003 with the import of 30kg coffee from a
farmer's co-op in San Pedro Nonulaco El Salvador direct to the Cube Microplex, a
cinema co-operative in Bristol UK.

In May 2005 Kate Rich is travelling from Bristol to Tehran by train, to attempt
to establish feral trade relations inside the Islamic Republic and en route. In
Iran she will locate a source of fresh Iranian sweets to stock at the Cube
Microplex bar. The trip will take approximately 2 weeks via South West Trains,
Eurostar, Orient Express, Trans Balkan Espress, Bosfor Espress & the ultraslow
Trans Asya Espress.

The plan is to combine cultural investigation with a kind of practical
blackmarket freight system. The journey will be broken at various wayside media
labs & cultural spaces along the route, for rest, refreshment & trade talks
about the potential for using social & cultural networks as freight mechanisms
for distributing goods.

Kate Rich is a Bristol-based artist & trader. For the past 12 years she has been
radio/video engineer with Bureau of Inverse Technology (BIT), an information
agency servicing the Information Age. The Bureau has developed an array of
information-handling devices, most notoriously the Bit Plane (miniature spy
plane navigated over the Silicon Valley California); the Suicide Box (vertical
motion detection device installed in range of the Golden Gate Bridge, San
Francisco); and the Antiterror Line, a telephone database for collecting
live news of civil liberties attacks in the wake of September 11 - see
