Vendredi 20 juin, à 20h
"Agitators" (1971) de Dezso Magyar. 78min
Ce film, produit par le studio Bela Balazs à Budapest – l’une des plateformes principales du cinéma expérimental dans la Hongrie communiste -, présente certaines des figures hongroises majeures du monde du cinéma et de la vidéo de la fin des années 1960 et du début des années 1970. 
L’intrigue suit le déroulement de la révolution bolchevique hongroise de 1919 ; toutefois l’intégralité du film peut davantage être lue comme une allégorie de la révolution de 1956 et des mouvements de la fin des années 1960. La construction des scènes donne l’impression de monologues récités par les personnages les uns aux autres, plutôt que de dialogues, et provoque un sentiment d’inquiétante étrangeté, faisant du film l’une des critiques les plus amères du décalage entre la théorie et la pensée utopique d’une part et la réalité d’autre part.

"Family Nest" (1979) de Bela Tarr. 108min
Le premier long-métrage de Bela Tarr, produit également par le studio Balazs Bela, présente un visage précoce et assez naturaliste du réalisateur, qui rencontrera le succès dans les années 1990 avec ses films étiquetés "Réalisme magique", comme "Satantango".
"Family Nest", un film au naturalisme affirmé, dénonce la même hypocrisie et la crise morale du système que "Agitators", mais sur un micro-niveau de domesticité. C’est l’histoire d’une famille de la classe ouvrière, huit personnes forcées de vivre dans une même pièce dans le contexte d’une crise du logement qui marque la fin du communisme en Hongrie.

"I am Cuba" (1964) de Mikhail Kalatozov. 141min
"I am Cuba" est une co-production soviéto-cubaine, à peine quelques années après la révolution cubaine et la crise des missiles cubains – qui rapprocha Cuba de l’Union Soviétique. Le film est construit comme une série de vignettes, caricaturant la société cubaine pré-révolutionnaire. "I am Cuba" est un parfait produit de propagande à une période où le communisme était à son sommet, tout en étant un chef-d’œuvre de photographie et de composition cinématographique, séduisant et fascinant le spectateur d’une manière problématique sur le plan éthique, à la manière des œuvres de Leni Riefenstahl.
 
Mercredi 25 juin, à 20h
"Out of the present" (1995) de Andrei Ujica. 96min
Andrei Ujica, réalisateur allemand d’origine roumaine, et théoricien des médias, a produit cette œuvre subtile et hypnotique, qui tient autant du documentaire que d’une discussion structuraliste autour de la réalisation de ce genre. "Out of the present" est l’histoire d’un cosmonaute soviétique en mission sur la station MIR pendant la dissolution de l’Union Soviétique, pris en suspens dans un espace-temps liminaire alors que l’Histoire s’accélérait.
 
Le programme de films se déroulera au cinéma Ciné 13,
situé juste à côté de la Fondation Kadist.

Friday, June 20, 8pm

"Agitators" (1971) by Dezso Magyar. 78min
The film was produced by the Bela Balazs Studio in Budapest - one of the main platforms for experimental film in communist Hungary -, and its realization featured some of the most important Hungarian figures of film making and video art of the late sixties and early seventies. 
The plot follows the unfolding of the Hungarian bolshevik revolution of 1919, however the whole film can rather be read as an allegory of the 1956 revolution and of the late sixties movements. The structure of the scenes in the film gives more the impression of characters monologuing and proclaiming one next to the other rather than dialoguing, an uncanny feeling that makes this film one of the most bitter critiques of the gap between theory and utopian thinking on one hand and reality, on the other hand.

 
"Family Nest" (1979) by Bela Tarr. 108min
The first feature film of Bela Tarr, produced by the same Balazs Bela Studio, shows an early, rather naturalistic version of the director who would to reach fame in the nineties with magical realist films such as "Satantango". 
The outright naturalistic film shows the same hypocrisy and moral crisis of the system as "Agitators", but on an almost opposite, micro-level of domesticity. It is the story of a working class family of eight, forced to live in a one room flat by the lack of available housing in late communist Hungary.

"I am Cuba" (1964) by Mikhail Kalatozov. 141min
A Soviet-Cuban co-production, just a few years after the Cuban revolution and the Cuban missile crisis that brought Cuba closer to the Soviet Union, "I am Cuba" is constructed around a series of vignettes, charicaturizing the pre-revolutionary Cuban society. A perfect product of propaganda in an era when communism was at the top of his self confidence, "I am Cuba" is nonetheless a masterpiece of cinematic photography and composition, seducing and fascinating the viewer in an ethically confilcting way reminding of Leni Riefenstahl's works.

"Out of the present" (1995) by Andrei Ujica. 96min
Andrei Ujica, a Romanian-German film maker and media theorist, produced this subtle and mesmerizing work that is equally a documentary as well as a structural discussion about documentary making. "Out of the present" is the story of a Soviet cosmonaut on space station MIR during the dissolution of the Soviet Union, suspended in a liminal space whilst history was fast on the making.

The film program will take place at the cinema Ciné 13,
located in the vicinity of Kadist Art Foundation.
