Hidden Places - Young artists in residence:

Art College students and young artists from towns along the Via Regia

and interested in urban culture are invited to participate in the

Hidden Places.

The Hidden Places Workshop & Exhibition Project combines in an

innovative way the (creation of) art with the challenges of culture

management.

The toponym Hidden Places stands for locations that - in the

subjective perception of young people - represent European history,

architecture and urban planning. The leitmotif is the old Royal Road

Via Regia, the historical axis of communication between The East and

The West, reaching from Kiev to Santiago de Compostela and embodying

mobility, exchange and inspiration while also symbolizing the

unification of Europe.

The German-Polish town Görlitz-Zgorzelec defines itself as an

"European Twin-City", part of Europe's unification - once a thriving

city thanks to its central position along the Via Regia, today

inspiring and fascinating visitors with its unique architecture. It

represents the nucleus of Hidden Places.

Young Europeans are invited to Görlitz-Zgorzelec as young-artists-in-

residence. Their task is to expose place of urban space under

artistic aspects, whether they are well-known or - in particular -

forgotten, unknown, new, undiscovered or hidden. The young artists

are expected to look for shared symbols and topographic signs as

elements connecting a vivid, well-working dialogue between different

cultures and they will transform these elements into artistic

photography and video works, and finally present the results to the

public.

This exhibition, created by the participants, will be first shown in

Görlitz-Zgorzelec, followed by exhibitions in the home town of each

young artist participating in the project. A catalogue of the

exhibition will be available as well. The participants become then

culture managers and curators of their own artistic works.

Project Timeline:

30th June 2009, deadline for application

9th - 23rd August 2009, "resident phase" in Görlitz-Zgorzelec

August - September 2009, online cooperation in order to design the

exhibition catalogue

January - December 2010, touring exhibition in all home towns of the

participants

Scholarship:

There are 10 scholarships for Hidden Places 2009. They include the

costs for travel, board and lodging, as well as material expenses.
