PROIECTIE

Isaac Julien
LOOKING FOR LANGSTON

A castigat prestigiosul premiu MIT Eugene McDermott Award in the Arts in 2001 si Frameline Lifetime Achievement Award in 2002. Lucrarea sa "Paradise Omeros" a fost prezentata ca parte din Documenta XI in Kassel in 2002.

SCREENING

Isaac Julien
LOOKING FOR LANGSTON

Award-winning British filmmaker Isaac Julien's film is both critically acclaimed and controversial. A lyrical and poetic consideration of the life of revered Harlem Renaissance poet Langston Hughes. Isaac Julien invokes Hughes as a black cultural icon, against an impressionistic, atmospheric setting that parallels a Harlem speakeasy of the 1920s with a 1980s London underground nightclub.

Julien explores the ambiguous sexual subtexts of the period of rich artistic expression, and the enduring cultural significance of the pioneers' work.
Shot, in sumptuous monochrome, the film combines archival footage with the newly staged set pieces, fantasy sequences, and an imagined love story. The result is a beautiful and ultimately celebratory piece about artistic expression and the nature of desire.

Isaac Julien (b. 1960) is considered one of the most important video artists of the last years. His film "Looking for Lanston" won the Teddy Award at the Berlin International Film Festival. He was nominated for the Turner Prize in 2001 and won a Semaine de la critique prize at the Cannes Film Festival in 1991. In 2003 he won the Grand Jury Prize at the Kunstfilm Biennale in Koln. Julien was the recipient of both the prestigious MIT Eugene McDermott Award in the Arts (2001) and the Frameline Lifetime Achievement Award (2002). His work "Paradise Omeros" was presented as part of Documenta XI in Kassel (2002). He exhibited at Tate Modern, Centre Pompidou, Guggenheim and MoCA Miami and was a visiting professor at Harvard University's Schools of Afro-American and Visual Environmental Studies. In September 2009 he became a professor at the Karlsruhe University of Arts and Design. Lives and works in London.
