Re: [oldboys] FAQ #6 and #7 -structural]

Hi Connie,

> maybe it is possible to have one, we had thought so, too, but it turned out to be conceived as the 'obn group'; a closed group. we wanted to get away from this status thing, and now turned to the activity principle.
> actually, we are in a kind of in between at the moment. 'the network' still expects the ex-cores to do the work... and if we do it, obn will never become a network, but always stay a group! hm, any good advice? how can you give people the feeling that it is an opportunity to have a powerful tool as a mailinglist and ACTIVELY use it?

hehee. No easy answers on this... Just looking at the development of
"our" list culture over the last years, it seems that it takes somebody
investing a lot of time and energy into cultivation... Most of the lists
that exist roughly within the obn neighborhood operate more or less as
semi-specialized announcement lists (is that fair?) which is fine, and
can be very productive, but personally, I would like to see more out of
this list! More ideas floating around, more discussion, more material to
get excited about.

Insert rant ///
Like what politics are at play when Sadie Plant gets dissed so
regularily for having written some texts ages ago where she described
a vision of cyberfeminism that many of us disagree with? So what?
There are plenty of women (and men) who had their cyberfem say. Why not
refute it instead of just dismissing her work categorically? Or assuming
that her work was ever meant to encompass all the possible
manifestations of CF? This is really troubling me. Sometimes I can't
even sleep just thinking about it!
 /// end rant

It seems like lists just work differently, everybody has email and
nobody has much time and participating in any network takes some time...
In general, I think it is a mistake to set up a list and just expecting
the subscribers to work their communal magic. Or maybe it is just
expecting too much from a mailing list in the first place. Personally,
I'm all in favor of the early nettime brand of moderation, which
happened mostly off-list with mails and invitations to people to address
specific topics based on prior work.. but that is just one approach ;))
and it took some people sitting spending alot of time.

take all the fun out of it ;))

I feel the need! But I have a few minutes at the moment...
Sure vereins culture is really special and I can understand why
somebody would want to avoid it at all costs! And maintaining some
form of institutional body is really a drag... But I was curious.

ciao,

PS: apologies for the funky formatting.. My wrap seems to go out of
