EVELINA DOMNITCH and DMITRY GELFAND
Wakening Shrouds: Evaporating Installation.
Opening October 28, 2000, 6 - 9 p.m.
240 ghostly images roaming through the air comprise an installation by
Dmitry Gelfand and Evelina Domnitch, their first solo show in New York.
Opening at White Box The Annex simultaneously with the Media Series, this
show offers a work devoid of recording media. The artists work with the
primary elements: Water, Air and Light.
21 images repeated with slight variations are projected through mineralized
water vapor, illustrating the purification of the anima. As the water
transforms into a lighter state, it brings to life the frozen images and
becomes their "soul". The installation also includes an intricate quadraphonic
(4-channel) soundscape.
The concept of an "Evaporating Installation" expresses the impossibility of
capturing and recording the Truth because of its evasive and fragile
nature.
The artists' central interest in the last four years is the propagation of
information by means of wave phenomena: electro-magnetic (light, radiation
etc) and isomorphic (music) wave forms. Evelina Domnitch has a background
in Philosophy, Fine Art and Computer Sciences. Dmitry Gelfand
graduated from NYU Film School and studied musical composition with Timothy
Vincent Clark, a disciple of Messiaen. During 1998-1999 they
curated the "Psycho-Acoustic" series of electronic and computer music in
New York, including collaborations with Morton Subotnik and Taylor
Deupree. Among their credits is the postproduction for a 35 mm film
"Radioman" that won a Gold Prize at the Prix Leonardo Festival in Italy and is
being released by the Deleuzian record label, Mille Plateaux in early 2001.
They shot, edited, and realized the computer animation and sound
design for the video piece of Osvaldo Romberg's opera installation Besame
Mucho, which is being exhibited presently within the Media Series at
White Box. Their other collaborations include work with Russian conceptual
artist Sergei Bugaev, known as Afrika.
