Am 6. September wäre John Cage 90 Jahre alt geworden - ein Grund, 
das Oeuvre und seinen Meister mit einer Geburtstagsparty zu feiern. 
Von frühen amüsanten Werken der 40er und 50er Jahre über Medien-Werke 
für Radio, Plattenspieler oder Kassettenrekorder bis hin zu harmonischen 
Number-Pieces spannt sich John Cages Schaffen. zeitkratzer, dem Werk von 
John Cage seit Jahren verbunden, ist für die gleiche herzlich unakademische
 Haltung bekannt. Das Ensemble feiert den hedonistischen Scharlatan ebenso 
wie den Pilze sammelnden, mit Zen liebäugelnden Asketen und den herausragenden 
musikalischen Handwerker und Bildhauer des Zufalls. Es kommen frühe Kammermusikwerke 
und opulente Oeuvres wie Birds & Telephones (gesponsert von Popstar Dolly Buster) zur 
Aufführung. Wie hatte Cage einst - sich der Bedeutung seines Namens bewusst - getitelt: 
"pour les oiseaux, pas pour les cages!"

John Butcher lebt in London und ist nach 25 Musiker-Jahren zu den führenden Kräften 
des Saxophonspiels zu zählen. Seine Musik reicht von freier Improvisation bis zu neuen 
Musikstrukturen oder gelegentlichen Auftritten mit "the ex". Zu seinen Partnern zählen 
Derek Bailey, Phil Durrant, Axel Dörner oder Gino Robair.
Christof Kurzmann, Österreicher, 2002 artist-in-residence, hat sich in den letzten Jahren 
durch sein Label "charhizma" und durch seine Beschäftigung als Elektronik-Improvisator einen 
Namen geschaffen. Seine Arbeit brachte ihn zuletzt mit Musikern wie Kaffe Matthews, 
Marina Rosenfeld oder Jerome Noetinger zusammen. Butcher und Kurzmann begegneten sich bei 
Auftritten der Formation "polwechsel" (Butcher/Dafeldecker/Stangl/Moser) und in Burkhard Stangls 
"VENUSMOND 3" (Chicago 1999) und setzen ihre Begegnungen in Form kontinuierlicher Duo-Arbeit fort.
1994 hat der finnische Musiker Mika Vaino gemeinsam mit Ilpo Vaisanen "Pan sonic" gegründet. 
Vaino, an diesem Abend an den Turntables, bietet den Hörern eine große Auswahl an fließenden, 
atmosphärischen Sounds und Rhythmen. Für Mika ist das wichtigste in seiner Musik der Klang an sich, 
die Struktur ist eher zweitrangig und über die Faszination "Klang" meint er: 
"For different kinds of tracks, of course, we´re looking for different kinds of sounds.
But I still don't know myself what is in a sound that attracts me. There's some kind of nature 
in the sound itself, some kind of information."(Mute)

On the 6th of September John Cage would have become 90 years old - a reason
to celebrate the master and his oeuvre with a musical birthday party.
His works range from early entertaining works in the 40ies and 50ies beyond
media-creations for radio, record players or tape recorders to harmonic
number pieces. zeitkratzer is known for the same rather non-academic
attitude. The ensemble celebrates the hedonistic charlatan as well as the
mushroom collecting, Zen inspired ascetic or the outstanding musician and
sculptor of coincidence. Early chamber music works will be performed just as 
sumptuous creations like "Birds & Telephones" (sponsored by Dolly Buster). 
Being aware of his name's ambiguity John Cage titled on of his works: 
"pour les oiseaux, pas pour les cages!"

The London musician John Butcher belongs to the world leading saxophone
players. His music ranges from free improvisation to new musical structures
and performances with "the ex". He played with Derek Bailey, Phil Durrant,
Axel Dörner, Gino Robair.
The Austrian Christof Kurzmann is artist-in-residence at the Podewil, Berlin
this year. In the past years he has become well known for his music label
"charhizma" and his work as an electronic improvisor. He performed with
musicians like Kaffe Matthews, Marina Rosenfeld or Jerome Noetinger.
Butcher and Kurzmann met at performances of "polwechsel"
(Butcher/Dafeldecker/Stangl/Moser) and in Burkhard Stangl's "Venusmond 3"
(Chicago 1999). Since then they have continuously been working together as a
duo.
In 1994 the finnish musician Mika Vaino formed "Pan sonic" together with 
Ilpo Vaisanen in Turku, Finland. Vaino, on this evening on the turntables, 
offers the listener a wide range of flowing, atmospheric sounds and rhythms.
"For me the most important thing in our music is the sound itself," says Vaino. 
"The structure is secondary. For different kinds of tracks, of course, 
were looking for different kinds of sounds. But I still don't know myself what 
is in a sound that attracts me. There's some kind of nature in the sound itself, 
some kind of information."(Mute)
