------- Forwarded Message Follows ------- From: nradic@soros.org.mk Organization: OSI - Macedonia To: premail@soros.org Date: Tue, 3 Dec 1996 19:15:37 +0100 Subject: URGENT : B-92 Shut Down Priority: urgent TO: PR Coordinators in national foundations FROM: Nebojsa Radics, OSI-Budapes Regional Office of Public Affairs DATE: 3 December, 1996 SUBJ.: B92 Shut Down B92, the last independent radio station in Serbia, was shut down today, on 3 December, 1996 at 14,00 CET. The station had been jammed since 27 November from an undefined source. The jamming occured as the Serbian authorities' reaction to the stations unique accurate reporting on the latest unrest on the streets in several Serbian cities. On the other hand, B92 was widely quoted and served as a refernce source for the foreign correspondents in Belgrade. Its programes were re-bradcasted by several local radio stations in Serbia. B92 continued distributing its email news services in English and Serbian. Their www site is still on the net, being based on a server in the United States. After B92 was closed, the media in Serbia became completely monolite, controled by the ruling party and the President. The new situation in the media is only another step in creating a closed society in Serbia. We are expecting a press release from B92. As soon as it is received, it will be forwarded via premail. ***************************************************************************** Marek Tuszynski - Internet Program Coordinator, The Stefan Batory Foundation ul.
