Beyond Art Exhibition, Budapest/Graz

[Beside the interview with Peter Weibel that was posted on Nettime in
November96, I have not seen further information or reviews of this show;
what follows is info which I took from the C3 website. Does anybody have
more info about this - it sounds potentially very interesting; worth going
to Graz for? -a]

Beyond the Art
 Jenseits von Kunst
 A mûvészeten túl

Jubilee exhibition organised in cooperation with the Austrian Cultural
Institute in Budapest
 Curator: Peter Weibel(Neue Galerie, Graz)

 9 October - 17 November 1996 Ludwig Museum, Budapest
 23 January - 2 March 1997 Neue Galerie am Landesmuseum Joanneum,Graz

Organisers: Katalin Néray (Ludwig Museum, Budapest), Christa Steinle and
Nadia Rottner(Neue Galerie, Graz)

In the last few years, national cultural self-representations have been of
common occurrence and have therefore ceased to be interesting. The
relations between Austria and Hungary have always been entirely different
than that between Hungary and Sweden. (The Austrians, as well as the
Hungarians, have many
commonplace and cliché preconceptions about each other.)

The purpose of the exhibition is both artistic and research-oriented. It
will attempt to introduce Austrian and Hungarian art and culture so as to
reveal the hidden (unrecognised) links of their common past and will try to
challenge(and replace) the existing clichés concerning the cultures of the
two nations - addressing the gap between the traditional conceptions of the
two cultures. To prove that nations have a significant talent for creating
formal and abstract methods of interpretation, it is necessary to go beyond
the classical borders of art. In addition to display the results of the
traditional and formal arts, the sciences of logic and mathematics should
also be presented. The connections between art and science that have made a
great impact on the cultural development of Austria and Hungary will be
shown within groups and sections.

The sections will be the following:

1. Theories of Perception and Kinetics
 a. Scientific section
 b. The Hungarian Representatives of Kinetic and Op Art Perception in
Contemporary Art
