Syndicate: V2_East Newsletter 97/06 |
V2_East / Syndicate Newsletter 97/05 - Introduction - Dates of upcoming events - Updates - General info about the Syndicate list - Subscription * Introduction * Dear Syndicalists, this month almost twenty new members joined the network after a special round of invitations. Some of you had sent me requests to invite a number of people, and there were positive responses from Yugoslavia, Romania, Latvia, Ukraine, Italy, Greece and Turkey. Carlo Giovanella wrote a description of his activities in Rome, and I would like to encourage other people to also introduce themselves to the other people in the V2_East/Syndicate network. More than anything, this initiative is about sharing information, building cooperation structures and realising projects together. Knowing who else is involved in the network is therefore of vital importance. The next meeting place for us will be the Deep Europe workshop which the V2_East/Syndicate is organising at the Hybrid Workspace in Kassel (28.7.-6.8.). (http://www.documenta.de/workspace) We will use the occasion for discussing Syndicate-related issues, for presenting work done by people associated with the network to the dX public, and for producing some 'content' in the form of texts, interviews, radio, video- and audiotapes, etc. The possibilities are endless, and below there is a list of keywords that points to some of the issues we might be dealing with. I do hope that we'll have a little Syndicate-potlach there in Kassel this summer with many of you joining or at least dropping by. We can arrange official documenta invitations if you need them to apply for travel, accommodation, etc. money. About 15 people have already announced their participation and are currently discussing plans and ideas for the workshop. If you want to join in, please, get in touch with me <abroeck@v2.nl>. The ars electronica in Linz/Austria (9.-13.9.) will be hosting the Syndicate Net.Shop, an Internet-Art-workshop for young net artists. And then we are planning the next bigger Syndicate meeting for the Ostranenie Forum in Dessau/Germany from 5.-9. November. The deadline for submissions to the festival programme is today and the jury will be meeting in Dessau in the course of July. What we will try to do is draw together a lot of the questions that have been raised at earlier meetings in Rotterdam, Liverpool, Ljubljana, Kassel and elsewhere, and discuss them in a concentrated way during Ostranenie. It would be great if as many of you as possible would come to Dessau in November, so please do start making your travel plans early and get in touch with the team at <emi@stiftung-bauhaus.de> for information, invitations, etc. In this newsletter, beside the list of upcoming events, there are some shorter infos and URLs from people who have just recently joined the network. It would be nice to receive more of these glimpses from the network nodes from time to time. I hope to see you soon, maybe in Kassel, but certainly in Dessau? Best wishes, -a * Dates of (some) upcoming events and exhibitions * (check the archive at http://www.v2.nl/mail/v2east for postings about these events) - 2 July 1997: Net.Radio Exchange Project on OZOneRiga/Lv - 5 July 1997: Parallel Space, London/UK - 28 July - 6 August 1997: Deep Europe at dX, Kassel/D - 8 - 10 August 1997: Hacking In Progress, HIP97, Almere/NL - 6 - 12 September: Just Watch, Zurich/CH - 8 -13 September 1997: Ars Electronica Festival, Linz/A - 12 - 18 September 1997: World Wide Video Festival, Amsterdam/NL - 15 September - 15 October 1997: Messages/REflections, Chisinau/Md - 22 - 27 September 1997: ISEA 97, Chicago/USA - 26 September - 4 October 1997: l'immagine leggera, Palermo, It - 3 - 23 October 1997: Hi-Tech/Art '97, Brno/CZ - 4 - 11 October 1997: 3rd Festival of Computer Arts, Maribor/SI - 5 October - 2 November 1997: Screens, Trondheim/NO - 7 - 19 October 1997: Interstanding 2, Tallinn/EE - 10 - 12 October 1997: ROOTless '97, Hull/UK - 16 - 26 October 1997: VIPER 97, Lucerne/CH - 18 October 1997: opening ZKM, Karlsruhe/D - 21 October 1997: SeaFair: Interactive Narration/Int. The use of architectural models and the increasing privatisation of information are creating boundaries within the communication space of the internet. But as in the "real" world, artists and activists are colonising the fluid terrain in between. This one-day conference brings together demonstrations of the latest technologies for building virtual worlds with critical perspectives and projects from artists, geographers and cultural commentators. Parallel Space is an attempt to map the real and virtual territories of the information age. Speakers: McKenzie Wark, Simon Bore, Doreen Massey, Constance Penley, Inke Arns, Steve Benford, Iain Borden, Derek Richards and Janice Cheddie of Displaced Data, Matthew Cornford and David Cross, Scott Lasch. ICA Box Office: 0171 930 3647 The Mall London SW1 URL: http://www.illumin.co.uk/ica/ Parallel Space has been programmed by Lisa Haskel <lisa@lisa.demon.co.uk> with Will Bell and ICA talks. * Deep Europe @ Hybrid WorkSpace @ documenta X A V2_East/Syndicate workshop in Kassel, Mon, 28.7. - Wed, 6.8.97 - keywords: building networks, forgetting pseudo-East/West, questioning ideologies, shifting borders, critique of the 'Western gaze', culture in a 'New Europe', the disappearance of Europe in the new global economic context, and in light of the local federalist/isolationnist efforts, culture-and-money, culture-and-power, the analog networks as a new form of "cult" activism, NGOs and PGOs, catching up (with technology, ideology, economy etc) versus keeping one's own identity * J U S T W A T C H Symposium, Workshop, Videoprogramm, Internetproject Representational Politics in the Electronic Media By (mainly) Women Media Producers From the Global South Shedhalle Zurich, Switzerland September 6th - 12th, 1997 The global aspect of new technologies is often praised as democratization of communication. Technology critics wonder, however, whether cyberspace does not simply reproduce patriarchal and colonial structures of the global media networks. The project JUST WATCH addresses the question of access to and alternative use of the electronic media to women from Africa, South America and Asia as well as minorities and migrants in Europe who are involved in media production (video, tv, internet). We will have a close look at the representation of women from the Global South in local and western tv-productions and discuss the current priorities and strategies in cultural articulation and self-representation. These questions will engage us in a discussion around identity politics in the representation and definition of ethnicity and gender. A debate which has been widely neglected in Europe eventhough media is known to play a crucial role in shaping western imagination and attitudes towards cultural values in other parts of the world. By the same token, these images have a great impact on the public opinion in the European domestic relations to migration, refugees and racism. The use of women as metaphors for nature, submission, victimization, backwardness or exotification still dominates media representation. Rather than simply producing counter narratives, we are interested in ways to reclaim and reconstruct various on-going geo-political histories and multiple identities. * Symposium September 6th and 7th Audio-visual presentations by women from independent media, community TV and video units from Latin America, Africa, Asia and the Middle East. *Video programm A video programm on the above issues will be put together. Please send in your video tapes for screening. * Media Workshop September 8th - 12th A one week workshop on media theory and practice for migrant and minority women in Europe who want to focus on identity politics in western media and formulate positions in self-representation. Detailed information available in June. *Internet Project JUST WATCH will have it's own web site which provides information on the symposium, video programm, workshop and minority media productions in Europe. If you wish to participate, please send us information about your activities and media programs. *Media File Special attention is given to media productions by transnationals, migrants and ethnic minorities in Europe with an emphasis on women's productions. JUST WATCH initiates a file providing sources and titles to enhance communication between producers + contribute to a wider public access. Project proposals must be sent to <lab@giardini.sm> with the subject: *LADA97* [deadline: July 15, 1997]. The festival is focused on public spaces' interventions and is curated by Giardini Pensili together with Amici della Musica Rimini, Comune di Rimini, Repubblica di San Marino, RTV San Marino Broadcasting Corporation, RAI Audiobox / Italian Broadcasting Corporation, ORF Kunstradio / Austrian Broadcasting Corporation. The title MISURE comes from the concept of definition of a space through various tools like distance, sound, time, geometry. What a border is? How does it work? The measurement of a space defines naturally its borders and deals with social infrastructures as well. What is a portable and nomadic border? How can the border be organised in a positive way in terms of reciprocal understanding based on difference? City means public space and of course architecture, streets, sounds, everybody's daily activites. It also means public and private transportation and transit places. All kinds of interfaces between us and our environment. The creation of projects in public spaces involves the necessity of dealing not just with the art world public but with everybody. In LADA emphasis is given to the praxis of the *permanent workshop*. This means that through all the year a series of events and presentations create a stream of activities where LADA can be regarded as a more visible point and the first part of the festival, between November 3 and 5, is totally dedicated to workshop activities. Radio Lada will be the on-line audio connection to the project. For this year's project we also intend to develop videoconference and wireless data transmission as art tools. Kunstradio is planning a project in the framework of LADA97 as a part of the preparation for *Recycling the Future* (Vienna, 4-7 Dec., 1997), Kunstradio's 10th anniversary project. I have worked in a couple of multimedia projects, and I have made a few proposals myself about new multimedia projects. (By the way you can check two short animations "the egg" and "Martha" at http://broad.way.com/art/Lydia.html which i did the music for). In Greece, there are things happening in terms of commercial work. Some of these are nice but only a few can be seen from an artistic point of view. Everybody here is so "burried" under his work. You see everything takes more effort to be done than it is actually needed for. It is the way that things are. * Gintaras Seputis <Gintaras.Seputis@vda.lt> from Vilnius in Lithuania writes: I would like to introduce you Raimundas Malasauskas, art critic and curator, temporary working in Vilnius Contemporary Art Center, who will replace me and will keep going SYNDICATE contacts in future. Since 1994 he collaborates in cultural weekly "Siaures Atenai" presenting articles and essays on contemporary art and culture. * Carlo Giovanella of MIFAV (Museo dell'Immagine Fotografica e delle Arti Visuali) in Rome: http://wwwas.roma2.infn.it * General Info * V2_East is an initiative of V2_Organisation Rotterdam, which is aimed at creating a network of people and institutions who are involved with or interested in media art in Eastern Europe and which wants to create an infrastructure that facilitates cooperations between partners in East and West. With its 'Syndicate' mailing list, website <http://www.v2.nl/east> and regular meetings, V2_East is becoming an important tool for fostering ties within the media art community in Europe which makes it increasingly obsolete to think in term of 'East' and 'West', and which will eventually make the V2_East initiative itself redundant. The V2_East/Syndicate is a no-budget network initiative rather than an institution. <syndicate@AEC.at> is the address of a mailing list which is dedicated to an exchange of information and ideas relating to the situation and future development of electronic and media art in Eastern Europe. A Syndicate-mail archive for messages that are coming in over the list (since April 97) can be found at: http://www.v2.nl/mail/v2east/ The list members include more than 150 artists, curators, networkers, writers, festival organisers, etc., from East as well as West European countries and beyond, who, through the 'Syndicate', are trying to improve the communication and cooperation between artists and organisations in East and West. The list was first installed following the initial meeting of the V2_East initiative at V2_Organisation in Rotterdam on January 21, 1996, at the end of the second Next 5 Minutes conference. During the DEAF96 festival in September, we held a V2_East Meeting in which around 30 people from 12 different countries participated. In April 97 the LEAF97 meeting in Liverpool brought together more than 30 people from across Europe. * Subscription * To subscribe to the syndicate list, please, send a message to <syndicate-request@aec.at> with the following text in the body of the message: 'subscribe [email-address]' For more information about the Syndicate, please, contact <abroeck@v2.nl> (Andreas Broeckmann). *Please, send information that you feel should appear in the next edition of this newsletter (deadline: 30 July 97) to: abroeck@v2.nl. ................................................................................ ..................
