Dear syndicalists, I'm happy to announce that The Old and The New, video documentary on the so called Ljubljana alternative scene (its protagonists and happenings) in the 80s, a period of extreme cultural activism and of pioneer intermedia events and projects in Slovenia. Video documentary THE OLD AND THE NEW was(of course) supported by the Open Society Institute-Slovenia and by Soros Center For Contemporary Art-Ljubljana. Best regards, Barbara Borcic ___________________________________________________ Video documentary THE OLD AND THE NEW by Neven Korda and Zemira Alajbegovic, 66 min., 1997 will be shown at the International Berlin Film Festival on February 16th at 12.00 in Studio 10 and on February 19th at 11.30 in Studio 10. ________________________________________________________ The Old an The New reconstructs the lively bustle of the Ljubljana subculture scene in the eighties, and it was made by two insiders. With minute and swift editing of the picture and sound, the makers have succeeded in compiling a number of documents and video shots - made between 1982 and 1988 - into an hour long narrative. The video combines the emotions and personal views with the socially-critical subculture and the wider historical context of the Yugoslav socialist system. It was inspired by Eisenstein - the title is from one of his films - and the Russian Avant-garde Movement. The Old and The New features theatre performances and concerts by punk bands (Otroci Socializma/The Children Of Socialism, O!Kult and others), shot in the underground club and multi-media performances by the electro-rock group Borghesia; clips from porno films alternate with images of aged socialist leaders and political rituals; we witness the start of the first gay and womenâs club as well as the discussions of philosophers such as Slavoj Zizek on the relationship between punk and ruling class. The subculture inspired and heralded the changes in the socialist regime during the 80.; The Old and The New revisits this heroic time. It preserves the marginal and peripheral part of itâs official history, and documents the history of those who were left out. __________________________________________________________ For more information please contact Ms. Nerina Kocjancic at The Berlin Film Festival, booth 335/III, phone (in Berlin) 265 54 265. or use e-mail zemira.pecovnik@guest.arnes.si Best regards, Barbara Borcic, SCCA-Ljubljana
