HEARING THINGS (The Oracle) is an installation and performance that explores the creation, capture, transformation and disintegration of language. In the space of Williamson's installation, an electronic Oracle - based on a speech recognition software that receives signals from microphones in the space - will recognise and (mis)interpret any sound or voices as speech, translating them into a continuous stream of text. Visitors are lured by an inviting, overhead microphone, stimulating the Oracle to produce unexpected accidental phrases out of the unknowing computer set-up. At certain times, Aaron Williamson comes into the installation space and fuels the Oracle - the text output of the computer - through his extraordinary and unnerving physical performance work. The results are both amusing and curiously affecting. * shinkansen's RISK FACTOR touring portfolio for 1998 - 2000 includes the 1998 productions, Aaron Williamson's HEARING THINGS (The Oracle) and Jessica Levy's (R)EPLY, (E)RASE , (C)OPY plus shinkansen's CLUB RESEARCH and SOUND WORKS EXCHANGE curations. Please contact shinkansen for full touring information if you have or hear of any opportunities that suit solo performances and live performance & technology work.
