Syndicate: inquiry Central and East European Book Projects |
From: CEEBP <ceebp@wxs.nl Subject: letter of inquiry Date: Wed, 04 Aug 1999 15:15:09 +0200 Amsterdam, 4 August 1999 Dear editors Some of you have been in contact with us for a few years. Nevertheless we will briefly introduce ourselves. The Amsterdam-based Fund for Central and East European Book Projects (CEEBP) was established in 1992 and assists publishers in Central and Eastern Europe, facing the transition to democracy and market economy. To this end, CEEBP awards grants for the publication of quality books and periodicals and supports projects aimed at improving the infrastructure of publishing. In the past few years CEEBP has received several requests for support from cultural magazines aimed at a young reading public active in the field of culture and sciences. So far only few of them were granted a subsidy because the CEEBP lacked the financial means and sometimes the concept of a journal did not fit in with our current grants scheme. Judging from the proposals that were sent to us from Croatia, Macedonia, Bosnia and Yugoslavia, there seem to be a lot of similarities: founded not less than 5 years ago, young editorial board, interest in new western movements in arts and culture but also lack of financial means, a poor reading public (mainly students), little or no government support, rejected by the official establishment. The CEEBP would like to help strenghtening the position of these journals by developing a programme that does not include financial support alone. Workshops on practical matters such as management and fundraising, mutual exchange of experiences and establishing links with Western and Eastern-European journals might be part of such a project. Since we do not want to impose any activities, we would like to hear your opinion. Please tell us what suggestions you have besides financial support that could help your journal to improve, grow and survive in the long term. As soon as a first inventory is made a short survey will be written and sent to you all for comments. Only after the project proposal is clearly defined the CEEBP can start to raise funds. We would like to stress that this letter is no guarantee for support to any of the journals mentioned below (please indicate if you have regular contact with any of these journals). If you do not wish to be part of such an initiative, let us know.
