Video Networks is a research project consisting of the development of 
an electronic interface system for enabling the creation of networked 
or connected video based art works and the works produced with this 
system.

It's purpose is to explore the potential of creating works which are 
cinematic in nature yet break away from fixed linear narratives to 
explore concepts such as montage, collage, mixing, rhythm, looping, 
non-linearity in combination with simple interactivity in real time.

The interface system employs a combination of reverse engineered 
inexpensive consumer electronics and some custom hardware to enable 
devices such as DVD players, monitors, video cameras, projectors etc. 
to communicate, in effect network and influence each other.

The first work employing the prototype system, entitled Dialogues, is a 
two channel video installation conceived and created by artists Garrett 
Lynch (http://www.asquare.org/) and Frédérique Santune 
(http://www.saturne-feerique.net/) which explores ideas of exploration, 
mapping and translation will be followed by subsequent thematic 
explorations using the interface system.

Video Networks has been partially funded by Canterbury Christ Church 
University and has been developed in cooperation with the Department of 
Electronics at the University of Kent.

Video Networks est un projet de recherche qui consiste à développer, 
dans un premier temps, un système d'interface électronique permettant 
la création d'œuvres vidéo gérées en réseau ou reliés entre-elles puis 
de produire de nouvelles œuvres à partir de ce système.

Video Networks a pour propos l'exploration du potentiel de création de 
travaux par nature cinématographiques mais hors du cadre de la 
narration linéaire afin de parcourir les concepts de montage, collage, 
mixage, rythme, boucle, non-linéarité, en combinaison avec une 
interactivité simple en temps réel.

Le système d'interface utilise une combinaison de composants 
électroniques grand public peu coûteux dont le fonctionnement a été 
modifié et de matériel fait sur commande pour permettre à des 
dispositifs tels que des lecteurs DVD, des moniteurs, des caméras 
vidéo, des projecteurs etc. de communiquer, de créer un réseau et de 
s'influencer.

La première pièce utilisant ce système-prototype, intitulée Dialogues, 
est une installation vidéo à deux voies conçue et créée par les 
artistes Garrett lynch (http://www.asquare.org/) et Frédérique Santune 
(http://www.saturne-feerique.net/). Elle aborde les idées 
d'exploration, de cartographie et de traduction [déplacement]. Cette 
pièce sera suivi d'explorations thématiques subséquentes utilisant le 
même système d'interface.

Video Networks a été partiellement subventionné par l'Université 
Canterbury Christ Church et développé en coopération avec le 
département d'électronique de l'Université du Kent.
