Multiplace - Network Culture Festival #8

April 14 - April 18, 2009
Please visit our Multiplace Online TV at http://www.multiplace.org

The eighth year of Festival Multiplace will take place between April 14 and April 18, 2009, in Bratislava, Nitra, Trnava, Zilina (Slovak Republic), Praha, Brno, Usti nad Labem, Zlin (Czech Republic), Krakow (Poland) and on the Internet. There will be various experimental programs prepared for visitors; concerts, projections, screenings, discussions, performances, parties and live streaming. Those who are braver can take part in network workshops or art installations where they can creatively use new technologies. This is a great event for fans of computer games and digital art as well as for those who are more interested in theory.

Multiplace is a network of people and independent organisations interested in the interaction between media, technology, the arts, culture and society. It is the biggest event of its kind in Slovakia and one of the main media art events in Central Europe. The activities of this network culminate each Spring with this festival that simultaneously take place within spaces and/or organised by, various independent organisations, including galleries, cultural centers, clubs, cafés, streets and flats. Many events are streamed live online and are open to everybody, some are only available on the Internet.

Program selection

In a street in Krakow, Marek Choloniewski prepares GPS Trans 10, mixing sounds and images sent from various places participating this year at the festival. You can find this 'cocktail' also on the website.
Marketa Cileckova prepares the performance, Trains Disperse Clouds, recording and mixing sounds, atmosphere and the energy of train stations, trains and roads that connect the different locations where Multiplace takes place. After its start in Brno, she will play 'her journey' in Bratislava and in the station, Zilina-Zariecie.
In Prague, the highlight of the festival is the official introduction of the Czech version of the Creative Commons license. At the Art Academy, there will be presentations, panel discussions, practical examples of use and creative sharing in the field of copyright, as well as the presentation of the Czech translation of the Laurence Lessig's book Free Culture.
The Experimental space Roxy/NoD will host Kyberia guild vs Facebook matrix which deals with social media and its skeptics ("Give me one reason why should I register on Facebook").
Sewage Echoes II is the title of the festival program exhibited in the non-conventional space of a former waste water plant in Bubenec, where visitors are invited to participate in workshops and to enjoy visual-acoustic performances. You are welcome to bring your audio and video instruments, computers, and anything else you'd like to participate with, to SHARE audiovisual jam organised by Elsa Vieira and others, who invite everyone to come to the real circus!
As they have done so in the past, the organisers in Brno have prepared a strong program with a dance play by Lenka Kocisova and an audio-visual performance (1A2V1, VJ Kolouch, Ink Flo, Anymade DJs) for the festival's opening. An international conference about media activism will welcome theorists, philosophers and artists such as Keiko Sei (Japan), Martin Bricelj (Slovenia), Maxigas (Hungary) and the Czech art group Rafani. There will be also video art and sound presentations and the project Urban Reset, dedicated to interactions between video-projection and  the public space.
Also, the Czech cities of Zlin and Usti nad Labem will have projections and exhibitions, organised by students of Tomas Bata University in Zlin (Department of Advertisement Photography, Faculty of Multimedia Communications) and Jan Evangelista Purkyne University in Usti nad Labem (Interactive Media Department).
A large-scale interactive exhibition dealing with the intersection between art and computer games, Play Cultures, will open the program in Bratislava's A4 - Zero Space. There will be space to discuss art, pop culture or digital games with the participating renowned media artists such as Jody or AES + F. While there, you can also immerse yourself into the light and water installation of Slovak designer Jan Turzo. Workshop participants can perform at the concert, See the Sounds, that will also show original Meotar projections of the Prague-based electro-ambient duo Neco v krabickach. As a finale to the festival, Multiples will host a special retro computer game party with the international fan team of the famous computer ZX Spectrum AY Riders (UK, RU, PL, CZ) and the visual artist from Brno VJ Texa, accompanied by the music of game consoles by duo Hugo and Hubero (CZ).
The experimental exhibition Web-Site-Specific will open in Nitra. Jan Koniarek Gallery in Trnava hosts a lecture about animation during last 20 years in Poland. Stanica Zilina-Zariecie prepares a workshop of collaborative digital drawings for kids ages 6 years and older.
