What is Media Theory Today?

Thursday, October 18th, 5:30pm
66 West 12th, room A510, New York City

Please join Alexander R. Galloway, Geert Lovink, and McKenzie Wark to mark the appearance of three new books published by Polity. Galloway will speak on the aesthetics and politics of interfaces, the topic of his book “The Interface Effect.” Lovink's “Networks Without a Cause: A Critique of Social Media” provides a necessary corrective to the prevailing enthusiasm around social media like Facebook. Wark's examination of perception at a distance, titled “Telesthesia: Communication, Culture & Class,” addresses the current media milieu, from the immediacy of the Occupy movement to security and government. Together they will have an informal discussion around a central question, what is media theory today?

Alexander R. Galloway, “The Interface Effect” (Polity, October 2012).
Geert Lovink, “Networks Without a Cause: A Critique of Social Media” (Polity, March 2012). McKenzie Wark, “Telesthesia: Communication, Culture & Class” (Polity, September 2012).

Books will be available for purchase.
