-----------------------------------------

On May 13th, 2000 conceptualart.org presented their first real world
installation. Utilizing space in a group show originally reserved for and
subsequently donated by LeE Montgomery of www.norwoodfunk.com,
conceptualart.org constructed a wall inside of the space of Nika Gallery
(1243 Appleton Street in SanFrancisco's Presidio). Text on the wall
announces the formation of the "versus" mailing list. Shortly after May
13th, a digital image of that wall was placed on the conceptualart.org
web site as a touchstone for the internet announcement of the list's
formation.

Below the image, a slightly edited version of the wall text appears as
follows:

the debate club

presents

"fine art versus graphic design"

conceptualart.org - an Internet group devoted to the subversion of the
visual
in art - has set up an e-mail forum for the discussion of the relative
merits of
fine art vs. graphic design as a response to the proliferation of
commercial
design on the Internet

Questions discussed may include, but are not limited to the following:

Is the distinction between art and design a false distinction?

If not, what are the unique features of each avenue of expression?

If so, why are there separate educational programs for art and design?

Are the fine arts and graphic design exclusively visual avenues of
expression?

Is this page a product of design or of artistic expression?

While many of these questions have been debated ad nauseaum with regard
to other mediums (i.e. photography, film, and video), the specificities
of the Internet demand that we revisit these discussions to clearly and
fully understand the internet's potential in terms of artistic practice.

To join the discussion send an e-mail message to lists@conceptualart.org
with the text "subscribe versus" in the body of the message.

Please forward this message to any and all appropriate parties.

Thank you for your time,
