i agree to your mail in general. yet i would like to comment the last
paragraph ...

yes :: gnu operating systems do not provide standardized high level apis -
yet! there are currently lots of projects aiming in that direction -
video4linux, dri [ direct rendering interface ], openInventor, .... and
do not miss, that there are [ yet only few ] successfull ports of standard
authoring tools :: the MAX-clone pl/gem, e.g.

i hope, that this situation will change in the near future [ but i share
many of your concerns about this ] ..
