[Nettime-bold] Antibiotic Resistance Campaign at Bayer Shareholder Meeting

Antibiotic Resistance Campaign protests at Bayer´s Shareholder Meeting

(COLOGNE, GERMANY) – Dr. Korinna Horta, a senior economist with the U.S.-based organization Environmental Defense, will speak at the Bayer AG shareholder meeting on Friday, April 27th, to protest Bayer’s refusal to withdraw their agricultural antibiotic, Baytril, that is contributing to antibiotic resistance in humans. Antibiotic resistance activists will gather outside the shareholder meeting with a 15-foot tall Bayer aspirin bottle bearing a sign that says: Bayer’s Misuse Of Antibiotics Gives Everyone A Headache.

Bayer has refused to comply with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s proposal to protect public health by banning the use in poultry of a type of antibiotic that is also vital for treating illness in humans. Further, Bayer has requested that FDA hold a formal hearing on the matter, which could delay action for years. During the process, their drug Baytril can continue to be used, thus worsening the human health threat of antibiotic resistance.

Other groups in the campaign include the Union of Concerned Scientists, Center for Science in the Public Interest, Institute for Agriculture and Trade Policy, American Public Health Association, Food Animal Concerns Trust, Sierra Club, Physicians for Social Responsibility.
