Wage Gap Narrows Between The Sexes

NEW YORK - The gap between men’s and women’s wages has narrowed to the closest on record. The reason for the change is that the median full-time female worker received a 5% weekly pay raise last year, while her male counterpart’s pay rose only 1.3%, which was below the inflation rate of 2%. However, women’s pay still lags behind men’s, with women full-time workers earning 77.5% of what male workers earn.

Proven Way To Get A Job

LOS ANGELES - These days job seekers need to work smarter to land job over their competition. The hard part is to get your resume read by the right people at the right time. Good jobs aren't on the market very long. To succeed your resume has to be available to the employer the moment they decide to fill a position.

One easy way to be found by employers who are looking to hire someone with your skills, is to post your resume on all the top career sites. As soon as an employer needs someone, this is usually the first place they look.  This is a proven, documented method of successful job searching. It's estimated that between 1.5 and 2 million hiring managers search the top 50 career sites daily for people with specific skills. While it may take a fair amount of work to find and fill out the forms of all these sites, you will definitely multiply your chances of landing a job.

If you want all the benefits without all the work, you can use a service like ResumeRabbit.com to do it for you. Following Directions Makes The Difference!

NEW YORK - It sounds simple, but, it’s amazing how many job seekers don’t follow directions when applying for employment. If the employer requests that you mail your resume, mail it! Don’t send it via email or call. If the employer asks for references, provide them. Read the job ad carefully and follow the directions or your resume may be the first one that ends up in the circular file. Why? Well, if you can’t follow the directions when applying for the job, what would you do if you were hired?

Traditional Pension Plans On The Way Out

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The days of the traditional defined benefit plan where an employer pays a set amount of pension benefits may be numbered. According to the U.S. Department of Labor in 1988, 63% of medium and large companies offered traditional pensions. By 1997, the number had fallen to 50%.

Instead, employers are turning to 401(k) and other plans that employees have to contribute to. In some cases, employers match contributions. In others, the employee pays for their own pension.

Earn A Degree Online, Then Earn More Money!

NEW YORK - Recent research uncovered that a university degree will definitely increase your marketability and value. Holders of an Associates or Bachelor degree earn 96% more on average than non-degreed professionals. MBA holders earn as much as 145% more.

Due to new online degree programs, you can earn the same respected Associates, Bachelors or Masters degrees as on-campus students, but for a fraction of the cost -- and much more conveniently. Online university students attend class at their own pace, anytime and anywhere that  works for them. Degree programs from well known accredited universities like Villanova or Regis are available through The University Alliance.

Traditional classrooms are replaced with streaming video lectures and other easy-to-use Internet technologies like; bulletin boards and chat rooms. Tests are taken online too. Plan a Job Search Party!

NEW YORK - Are you out of work or do you know someone who is? A great way to provide job search assistance is to plan a job search networking party.

Have the job seekers bring multiple copies of their resume to hand out, and invite all of their employed friends. Let the party-goers know that they will be asked to share the job seeker resumes with anyone who might be able to provide job search assistance. Everyone gets to socialize, meet new people and enjoy an evening out.  And the job seekers might just get some assistance they wouldn’t have received elsewhere!

Companies In the News

NEW YORK - Merrill Lynch agreed to pay an $80 million fine to satisfy a Securities and Exchange Commission inquiry into its dealings with Enron. This is a record fine for the SEC. Agilent, the equipment test manufacturer, is cutting another 4,000 jobs. This follows the lay-off of 8,000 employees in late 2001 and 2,500 in November. Micron Technology Inc., the world's second largest computer memory chip maker plans to lay-off 10 per cent of its labor force of more than 18,000.

This Months Report:  Long Distance Service

This month we focus on Long Distance. Many people still pay as much as 20¢ per minute (in 1 minute increments), when rates are available as low as 3.9¢ per minute (in 6 second increments).  And making the switch is easy! Do you know what you pay for long distance? One of AT&T's best plans offers 7 cents per minute (in 1 minute increments) PLUS a monthly fee.

We recommend you sign up on-line with RiteRate Long Distance, Powered by Capsule Communications.

While their web page is not as pretty as AT&T's, they offer great service at the lowest rates we've found. With RiteRate you get the same quality direct-dial service you're used to, unlimited 3.9¢ per minute state-to-state calls (24 hours per day), low in-state and international rates, 6 second billing increments and no monthly fees.  It's easy and takes about 5 minutes to switch to RiteRate Long Distance using their instant on-line sign-up form.
