Design Exchange Universal Design Workshop Series Continues with
Special Session on Creating Accessible Communities
Toronto, Ontario: Design Exchange (DX) announces the details of the
next workshop in its series of professional development workshops on
Universal Design.
Creating Accessible Communities

Keynote Presentation: Town of Markham – opened by Mayor W. Donald
Cousens
This workshop will showcase and explore how communities are
approaching and achieving universal access. Both existing and new
planned community examples will be considered. As well, topics on
visible and flexible housing will be covered. Best practices will
also be presented, drawing examples from various locations, with a
focus on the Town of Markham. DX is pleased to announce that
Markham’s Mayor, W. Donald Cousens will open the workshop.
Planners, architects, developers and community elected officials
are encouraged to attend.
Design Exchange in partnership with the Ministry of Citizenship and
Immigration, Ontario presents this workshop, with additional support
from the Town of Markham and the Ontario Professional Planners
Institute.

Please find below the first announcement for AV.06, the second
audiovisual festival in the North East of England.
The AV Festival is a new bi-annual international festival of
digital art, moving image, music and new media convergence. AV.06
will take place across three cities during the first two weeks of
March 2006, and will examine one of the key issues within creative
and scientific practice - Life. Many of you on Spectre have
created work which addresses the festival theme in some way, and
I'd be very interested to know what your thoughts on this topic
are.
With that in mind, I wanted to draw your attention to our Call for
Expressions of Interest http://www.avfest.co.uk/interest.html l,
which we have just released. AV are commissioning a small number of
new projects, and will also be presenting existing projects related
to the festival theme.

The AV Festival is a new bi-annual international festival of
digital art, moving image, music and new media convergence which
takes place in the North East of England. The second AV festival -
AV.06 - will take place across three cities in the North East of
England during the first two weeks of March 2006. It will examine
one of the key issues within creative and scientific practice -
life.
AV.06 will include internationally renowned artists, filmmakers,
researchers, technicians and musicians as well as emerging
practitioners. Concerts, performances and exhibitions will be
complemented by a conference and an education programme.
AV.06 will feature:
- new commissions of film, digital arts, music and games
- outdoor projects which will transform landmark public
buildings or
spaces
- live performance events at the Sage Gateshead and other
concert venues
- a major strand of activity focussing on computer games
- a screening programme
- exhibitions and installations
- an international conference
- an education programme of workshops, seminars and lectures
- a programme of club events and parties
- a radio station broadcasting on-air and online
- digital projects for the region's public transport system
AV.06 is providing creative practitioners with an opportunity to
contribute ideas to the programme. If you have an existing project
which could fit the thematic context of the programme, or an idea
for a new work, we would like to hear about it.
___AV.06 : thematics
The theme of AV.06 is Life. The festival will explore the
interplay between digital and biological life as explored by
audiovisual practitioners from all disciplines.
In an increasingly technologised society, we find ourselves
surrounded by, and immersed in, virtual and artificial worlds.
Evolutionary computational techniques and genetic algorithms
correlate the processes of the computer with the processes we
observe in biology. Digital technology has allowed for entire
environments to be modelled within the computer. The internet has
created a culture, where societies of users can inhabit these
synthetic environments. Games, online communities and immersive
interactive environments have become worlds within worlds.
At the same time, genetic engineering is allowing for the creation
of synthetic biological worlds, which are constructed in the
laboratory. Biotechnology raises passions, hopes, fears and
fascinations. On the cutting edge of science and ethics, it offers
many promises, but prompts anxiety also. Fields such as stem cell
research, genetic modification and reproductive cloning intrigue
and perturb us, provoking questions about the status of life
itself.
The North East of England has become a bioresearch centre of
international repute, with scientists at the Centre for Stem Cell
Biology and Developmental Genetics at the University of Newcastle
engaged in human embryonic stem cell research, and medical
researchers at the James Cook Hospital in Middlesbrough working on
reproductive treatments for patients. The often troubling ethical
and political implications of this work are considered and
communicated by organisations such as the Policy, Ethics and Life
Sciences Research Centre (PEALs) and the Centre for Life.
Artists also have a role to play in considering the changing nature
of life. Artificial life and emergent systems have long been
subjects for new media artists, exemplified by the work of Kenneth
Rinaldo (USA), William Latham (UK/USA) and Jon McCormack
(Australia). Now, practitioners such as the Critical Art Ensemble
(USA) and Oron Catts & Ionat Zuur (Australia), are beginning to
work directly with living biological systems. With artists and
scientists alike fabricating new life-forms and ecologies, our
understanding of what life is and where it can happen is shifting,
evolving and mutating.
AV.06 will explore and present new ways of thinking about Life. The
festival will interrogate the boundaries of what is 'natural' and
what is 'synthetic' in this context, aiming to extend and rework
these notions. It will probe digital and biological 'lifeforms' and
'living systems', and ask such questions as: what do these
'creations' look, sound and feel like? What is it like to 'inhabit'
these systems? Who are the demiurges of the artificial age?
Areas which may inform the exploration of Life within AV.06 include
(but are not restricted to):
- bioscience and biotechnology
- artificial life
- evolutionary computation and genetic algorithms
- technologically mediated ecosystems, ecologies and
environments
- virtual or networked spaces as social 'living' environments
- life processes as tools for discovery and learning
- evolutionary approaches to narrative within film
- algorithmic techniques within music composition and audio
environments
- philosophical and ethical explorations of the boundaries of
nature
AV.06 will also include a major strand on gaming, which will
explore, as part of its focus, the way that multi-player games, are
increasingly evolving into highly complex social "living"
environments

AV will be commissioning new works especially for the festival, as
well as presenting creative work which has already been produced.
AV is now calling for expressions of interest from artists,
filmmakers, musicians,
DJs, VJs, designers, games developers, theorists, technologists,
scientists, philosophers and others interested in this field.
You are invited to submit a short proposal for:
- a new work which you would like to make specifically for the
festival
- an existing project which you would like to present at the
festival

___AV: the story so far
The first AV Festival was held in Newcastle, Middlesbrough and
Sunderland, 8 - 22 November 2003, organised by the Tyneside Cinema,
Middlesbrough Council, the University of Teesside and Sunderland
City Council. The festival delivered over one hundred events across
three towns in two weeks, and included performances by the Cinematic
Orchestra, DJ Food, Tina Frank and General Magic, screenings of
Matthew Barney's Cremaster Cycle, a Mike Figgis film retrospective,
onedotzero screenings and a lively programme of workshops and
lectures. Over 35 new works were commissioned, including new pieces
by filmmaker, Richard Fenwick and The Light Surgeons.
AV.03 proved to be one of the biggest new media, digital arts and
digital music festival in the UK, and is the only festival event to
occur in each major population centre in the North East region. The

organisations in the region. The North-East's top universities
have joined forces with three City Councils and an independent

ANNOUNCEMENT
This year, the Kassel Documentary Film and Video Festival will take
place
from November 8th to 13th, 2005. The festival presents current
documentary
films and videos, the media art exhibition MONITORING, as well as
the
interfiction symposium. We invite all filmmakers, media people, and
artists
to submit their latest works and projects for the individual
sections of
the Festival program. Closing date for entries is August 1st, 2005.
DocumentaryFilmVideoArt
One of the festival?s main emphasis lies on current films and
videos
exploring their subject matters with documentary means. The
festival is
also interested in experimental and artistic video works.
MONITORING
The exhibition MONITORING deals with the current room related
positioning
of media art. During the festival, it displays approximately 15
media
installations and sculptures, which will be selected among the
entries. The
exhibition will be held in the Suedfluegel and other locations of
the Kassel
KulturBahnhof. The exhibition is a cooperative effort of the
festival, the
"Kasseler Kunstverein" and the documenta Archive of the City of
Kassel.
AWARDS
At the festival, three awards will be presented, each endowed with
EURO
2,500. The "Golden Key", sponsored by the City of Kassel, is
presented to
the best documentary by a young director. The newspaper HNA
recognises an
outstanding production from the region of Northern Hesse with its
"Golden
Hercules" award. The "Golden Cube" is presented to the best
installation of
the exhibition MONITORING. In addition, there is also an award for
the
innovative use of digital production and post-production tools.
Artists may
apply for the project grant of the Werkleitz Gesellschaft e.V. ?
Center for
Art and Media Sachsen-Anhalt ? providing technical support worth up
to EURO
5,000.

This year?s interfiction symposium (including lectures,
presentations and a
workshop) is dedicated to ?Learning from?? ?. Artists, video- and
filmmakers, researchers, writers and others interested in
transdisciplinary
exchange on the related issue are invited to join the conference
and to
discuss their ideas and projects dealing with ideas, images,
figures and
strategies of translation, transmission, transfer and/or
transgression.

La haute technologie au service de l’art

~ Depuis 70 ans, Axson Technologies est l’un des leaders de la
fabrication et de la formulation de résines polyuréthane, époxy et
silicone destinées à la haute technologie (espace, aéronautique,
automobile).
~ Aujourd’hui ces matériaux, notamment sous l’impulsion de
designers d’avant-garde, sont devenus non seulement un
support abondamment utilisé dans le processus de création,
mais également un moyen d’expression artistique à part entière.
~ Afin de mettre en lumière la richesse de l’utilisation des
résines
et matériaux composites dans l’art et le design et surtout de
permettre aux artistes de faire connaître leur travail auprès d’un
public plus large et de soutenir la création, Axson Technologies
crée, en 2005, le Tech Art Challenge.
~ Les formes d'art les plus variées seront représentées, la seule
réelle contrainte étant que les résines fassent partie intégrante
de l'oeuvre.
~ Axson Technologies a souhaité que ce concours, annuel, soit
ouvert à l’international : dans un premier temps à des
participants venant l’Europe entière, puis dans un second temps
à tous, sans contrainte de nationalité.

Le jury
~ Les créations seront examinées par un jury constitué de
professionnels, en charge de la présélection. Les finalistes
exposeront ensuite leurs oeuvres au SEL (Sèvres, 92) où un jury
prestigieux désignera les lauréats.

~ Le concours est gratuit et sans limite d’âge. Il est ouvert à
toute
personne physique ou morale, individu ou groupe, artiste ou
créateur.

esther hiepler (née en 1966, vit et travaille à bâle / suisse)
présentera des travaux issus de "sammlung" / "collection", un
ensemble d'images initié en 1998. ce travail se compose de
photographies et de vidéos qui peuvent, à partir de différents
critères choisis par l'artiste, être regroupées par thèmes. à
l'instar de toute collection, elles contiennent les possibilités de
nouveaux ré-agencements.
avec sa série "weiss" / "blanc" constituée de photographies
d'abribus, de bâches de chantier, de panneaux publicitaires,
d'éléments architecturaux ou de vitrines urbaines désaffectées qui
ont pour point commun d'être blancs, esther hiepler révèle la
présence quotidienne du blanc dans l'espace urbain, faisant
implicitement référence au paradigme moderne du white cube.
"häuser fangen" / "capturer des maisons" est une autre collection
composée de photographies et de vidéos qui résulte de la tentative
de capturer, lors d'un voyage en train entre madrid et
l'andalousie, les innombrables et minuscules maisonnettes de forme
et de conception minimaliste qui structurent le paysage de la
mancha. utilisant le ralenti et le principe de la boucle dans le
montage de ses vidéos, esther hiepler capture un de ses petits
groupes de maisons faisant osciller celui-ci entre mouvement et
fixité.

Sex appeal bien campé, regard tripé,beauté ultra-travaillée.
Voici Joy, une blonde radicale qui dégage autant côté femme que
côté mec.
Elle apparaît ici sur la scène pailletée du Baron, cabaret parisien
old school des
quartiers chics, devant la caméra - elle aussi très hot - de Brice
Dellsperger, artiste et remetteur en scène habile tendance camp.
Danseuse professionnelle et transsexuelle athlétique, Joy donne ici
le meilleur d’elle même et livre un strip-tease sulfureux, remake et
demake du clip de Baillie Walsh tourné au Raymond Revue Bar de
Londres en 1992 pour Massive Attack : Ladies & Gentlemen: Take a
lift to 7th Heaven with Miss Sparkle dans lequel une inconnue non
créditée, s’adonne à un strip magnifiquement trans-genre comme
tourné en une seule prise, dans et devant un ascenseur ultra chic.
Cette idée de la femme a fasciné Dellsperger depuis longtemps et
ressort à plein tube.
Talons et boa sont ici réunis pour faire de cette danse de bar
tonique filmée puis
montée un coup à l’endroit un coup à l’envers six fois de suite
(une boucle de 22
minutes) l’éloge d’un corps double, arrogant et plein de peps
motivé par Dellsperger
lui-même et spectacularisé par Joy la pro dans une atmosphère
silencieuse et
existentielle comme rougie.

Eggnogs & Flips est le nom d’un cocktail à l’oeuf typiquement
british dont la recette n’est plus connue que de rares barmen
connaisseurs. C’est aussi le titre énigmatique de l’exposition de
Fiona Jardine et Lili Reynaud Dewar à Public>. Flip, c’est la
pichenette, à l’image du geste qui pousse le jaune d’oeuf dans
l’alcool. C’est aussi le revers, l’autre face. Sur la base de ce
mot, la structure même de l’exposition peut être reliée à ce geste
habile. Le flip tient dans le choix aussi bien conceptuel
qu’arbitraire d’agencer l’exposition selon une symétrie en miroir.
La symétrie est construite autour d’une diagonale abstraite tracée
dans l’espace. Appliquée avec rigueur, elle impose de l’extérieur
une articulation binaire à des oeuvres très différentes. Contrainte
formelle efficace, la symétrie en miroir crée l’image globale d’un
décor redoublé.
Doubler une oeuvre d’art, c’est déjà entrer dans une série en en
postulant la reproductibilité technique. Mais chaque doublure étant
ici le reflet de l’autre, les "couples" sont imparfaitement
identiques. Fiona Jardine et Lili Reynaud Dewar, l’une peintre,
l’autre sculpteur, ont en commun d’utiliser des procédés manuels au
service de finis précis à l’aspect usiné. Cette manipulation
n’exclut donc pas de légères imperfections de surface. Les artistes
jouent manifestement avec cette contradiction apparente à produire à
la main en série des objets lisses à la manière d’artisans qui
auraient l’usine pour idéal.
L’exposition amplifie les contrastes esthétiques qui tirent
l’ensemble aussi bien du côté du caprice décoratif que de la
réflexion critique sur les codes du décoratif en sculpture et en
peinture. Cette exposition affirme sa force d’apparat dans un jeu
d’agencement entre silhouettes d’objets et lignes graphiques.
Les deux artistes usent de formes spécifiques issues du design ou
de l’imagerie de consommation de luxe à la manière de modèles pour
leurs oeuvres. Décontextualisés, ces modèles d’origine ont la
particularité de s’adapter facilement au champ de l’art : leurs
formes et leurs motifs glissent sur les codes admis en sculpture et
en peinture. Leurs oeuvres sont alors le terrain d’expériences sur
le modèle, la couleur, la forme, le dispositif. Elles synthétisent
le pouvoir de séduction de leurs univers d’origines et un idéal
moderniste inscrivant l’autonomie de l’oeuvre dans des
problématiques propres au médium. Leurs oeuvres, dans une relation
très opaque à leur modèle d’origine, portent l’histoire de leur
dérivés formels. Cette réflexion sur la sculpture et la peinture en
elles-mêmes et sur leurs poncifs, passe par des usages subjectifs et
anecdotiques de l’objet. L’exposition renvoie directement à l’usage
bourgeois d’un art abstrait décoratif rehaussé, avec un certain
humour, par l’usage de matériaux contemporains. Ces oeuvres
quasi-abstraites à l’accroche figurative n’hésitent pas à plonger
dans des délires ornementaux ou des maniérismes de fabrique. Les
procédés critiques mis en oeuvre dans cette exposition jouent avec
une pointe d’ironie sur cette catégorie de l’exposition
d’intérieur.
Fiona Jardine vit à Glasgow.
Lili Reynaud Dewar vit à Nantes où elle suit le post diplôme.
Elles ont suivit ensemble le programme du Master of Fine Arts de la
Glasgow School of Arts en 2001-2003.
L’exposition a reçu le soutien du British Council et de l’Ecole des
Beaux Arts de Nantes.

Un millier de Bleus
Une installation de Takumi Endo
Nous pénétrons sans angoisse dans de profondes ténèbres.
Accompagnés par les lueurs bleues fragiles et éphémères posées là
par Takumi Endo. Evidemment ici il ne s¹agit pas d¹éblouir le
promeneur qui traverse les lieux. Il s¹agit simplement, mais c¹est
immense, d¹éveiller en chacun de nous d¹anciennes lumières
invisibles. Et seules, parfois, les brillances des yeux de ceux
qui se croisent ici, témoignent de l¹ampleur des visions qui se
déploient dans ce discret et puissant rituel.
Je connais des gens venus de loin pour découvrir les lueurs de
Takumi Endo lors de la création de cette pièce en décembre 2004,
dans une cour intérieure de l¹Hôpital de l¹Hôtel Dieu, à l¹occasion
de la Fête des Lumières de Lyon.
Ils sont repartis fiers et comblés par cette invitation au silence,
à la méditation, à la discrétion et à la retenue dans un monde que
l¹on sait voué au vacarme, aux clignotements et aux aveuglements.
Je connais aussi des gens dont les destins ont basculés à proximité
de ces lueurs vacillantes et mystérieuses.
Cette ouverture soudaine des âmes et les nouvelles disponibilités
que se déploient alors sont les signes tangibles que nous avons le
privilège de croiser la route d¹un grand poète.
Takumi Endo est un homme silencieux, obstiné, élégant et discret.
Son art est fait de présence légère, de conscience en éveil, de
musique intérieure et de transparences amies. ³Un millier de bleus²
est une oeuvre sans forme, sans son et sans image qui dilate
l¹espace et qui respire en nous, silencieusement, longtemps après
que nous l¹ayons découvert .

Mireille Loup présente à la galerie Artem les photographies
couleur de la série "Esquives", dans le cadre du Mai-Photographie
2005, thématique : "le trouble".
"Je suis partie de l'idée suivante : chaque décor est une
projection mentale de l'enfant qui lui permet d'échapper à une
réalité pénible dont on ne sait rien a priori dans les images. Le
personnage semble subir le paysage plutôt que d'y prendre place. En
fait, les refuges qu'elle s'invente l'emprisonneraient entre un
imaginaire où
elle ne parvient pas à s'épanouir et un monde réel hostile qui la
rattrape. Les rapports d'échelle traduisent ce décalage. L'enfant
est en lien direct avec la protagoniste de mon roman (le gisant),
véritable pendant littéraire dans un triptyque composé de
photographies (Esquives), et de vidéos (objections). Le personnage
principal du roman, une jeune femme, se trouve confronté à son
passé douloureux, une enfance vécue dans une atmosphère familiale
de harcèlement et persécution mentale." Mireille Loup.

Les œuvres de Léo Delarue témoignent du corps sans pour autant en
être la représentation.
Formes tridimentionnelles, de nature organique, elles contiennent
une densité et une tension qui flouent les limites entre intérieur
et extérieur : des cavités se forment et se dérobent, des lignes
s'entrelacent, la matière se fait peau. Semblant tenir dans une
zone d'indiscernabilité - un seuil - ou abstraction et figuration
s'interpénètrent, les sculptures de Léo Delarue font appel à
l'imaginaire collectif, mais échappent à toute littéralité.
Organes, viscères, corps embryonnaires, mues, crysalides, cocons...
si l'artiste souhaite échapper à l'image, elle maintient ses pièces
dans l'espace de l'évocation.
Léo Delarue entretient un rapport éminemment physique et instinctif
avec la matière et insuffle à ses pièces une charge émotionnelle
vive.
Aux sculptures pré-existent des notes, des dessins, qui lui
permettent d'établir un premier contact entre une idée et sa future
incarnation. Pour faire exister ses formes, elle manipule, assemble,
confronte les matériaux : silicone, latex, plâtre, résine, goudron,
paraffine, ou plus récemment la céramique. Leur alliance accentue la
dimension tactile des pièces et provoque souvent un rapport duel
entre les textures : le transparent et le mat, le léger et le
lourd, le lisse et le rugueux, le foncé et le clair. "Monde de
légèreté apparente, de transparence, parfois de contacts entre les
matières, entre les couleurs aussi, blanc du plâtre, rouge du
latex, noir du goudron...". Présence de la couleur donc, qu'elle
provienne des qualités intrinsèques de chaque matière ou qu'elle
soit ajoutée. Les teintes rouges utilisées dans de nombreuses
œuvres, accentuent leur aspect charnel, viscéral, voire érotique.
Pour son exposition à L'H du Siège, Léo Delarue présente une
sélection d'œuvres prélevée sur plusieurs années, proposant une
lecture de son cheminement artistique.

Ridiculement précieux…
artcore projette d’inaugurer le 09 juin 2005 une boutique dédiée
aux séries limitées d’artistes proposant des œuvres pour toutes les
bourses… Cette boutique portera le nom de Ridiculement précieux .
Elle sera ouverte dans le show room du 40 rue de Richelieu. Nous
souhaitons que ce nouvel espace dédié à la création soit l’occasion
de diffuser les objets les plus ridiculement précieux.
Les « Mini œuvres », objets d’art, vêtements, bijoux, CD, livres,
photographies de Ridiculement précieux seront toutes des œuvres
d’artistes destinées à satisfaire tous les publics, à promouvoir
l’œuvre et le travail de chacun, à provoquer des rencontres, des
commandes, à encourager un comportement alternatif vis-à-vis de
l’art contemporain.
Ridiculement précieux sera articulée autour de trois pôles :
- Un espace déclinant les œuvres présentées dans l’espace
d’exposition.
- Un espace d’oeuvres consacrées à la thématique de Molière.
- Un espace d’œuvres destinées au jeune public.
Nous sommes également intéressés par des artistes travaillant le
mobilier pour « habiller » la boutique, afin que chaque élément
soit une œuvre d’art !
Cette boutique fonctionnera en dépôt d’œuvres avec une commission
pour l’association. Fournissez nous le prix que vous souhaitez
obtenir de vos œuvres ainsi que des visuels (ou objets réels) de
chacune des oeuvres proposées.
Nous souhaiterions qu’aucune œuvre n’excède un prix public de 300
euros. De plus nous serions ravis que vous puissiez nous proposez
des ensembles afin que chaque artiste puisse être identifié comme
tel. Merci d’avance de votre participation.

The beautiful word 'montage' signifies assembling.
If the word isn't still fashionable it has all chances to become
common. Well! Let the combination of impact units in one whole
receive this ambiguous semi-industrial,
semi-music-hall signification blending together
two words!
They are both from the heart of urbanization and
these years we all were awfully urbanized. Like
this the term "attractions montage" will come

Moscow International Film Festival (MIFF) is held since 1959 and
gradually it has become one of most respectable and prestigious
film-forums in the world. In 1973 MIFF was registered by the
International Federation of Film-producers associations (FIAPF) as
an ŤAť class film festival alongside with those in
Berlin, Cannes, San-Sebastian, Karlovy Vary and Venice. This is the
sixth year Media Forum is organized as part of the Moscow
International Film Festival. The role of new media in audiovisual
art and culture received due recognition and Media Forum was
immediately introduced into the official program of MIFF.
Media Forum is the first event of such scale in Russia and it
reveals a new vision of the world of new media culture and new
screen technologies to the professionals, critics and public in
general. The objective of Media Forum is to demonstrate the
connection between traditional and modern branches of screen
culture, the impact of technological innovations on visual arts.
Media Forum as action is an exchange of ideas, infusion of new
forces into contemporary culture and vice versa. It is an attempt
to demonsrtate the logic of new thought and new communications. At
the moment it is inside media culture that new ideas go through
trial and approbation, ideas that cannot be realized in
contemporary art context.

Resting upon the Sergey Eisenstein 'Attraction Montage' avant-garde
conception the Festival aims at collecting "Attractions Park"
represented by the new technologies in experimental film, video,
and interactivity art. The Festival works for re-actualizing
Eisenstein conception in correspondence with contemporary ideology,
cultural context and technology.

What Now?
Art Practice & Public Institutions Today
This panel discussion will address ways in which art institutions
reflect the changing nature of art practice. The work of many
conceptual artists in the 60's and 70's had a strong impact on the
structure of art institutions and on their evolution over the past
decades. Does this process continue now, as the public domain is
radically shrinking? Do tendencies emergent from artists' work
still shape the structure of museums and exhibitions, or is this
process now initiated by the market side of the art world? How to
balance artists' production needs with the available means, when
some of the more recent technologies are perhaps more suitable for
Hollywood budgets rather than small nonprofit organizations? What
could be new possible models for public institutions today? These
and other related questions will be addressed and discussed by the
invited speakers.
Organized by Etant donnes in conjunction with the exhibition "The
Eye of the Storm: Works in Situ by Daniel Buren" at the Solomon R.
Guggenheim Museum.
ABOUT PANELISTS
Daniel Birnbaum is Rector of the Stadelschule Art Academy and
Director of Portikus Gallery, both in Frankfurt am Main. He has
co-curated major exhibitions such as "Delays & Revolutions" at the
50th Venice Biennale and the first Moscow Biennale. He also
directed the International Artists Studio Program in Sweden,
promoting international residencies and exchange. He is an art
critic and was a contributing editor at Artforum. Birnbaum is also
a published philosopher and an art history scholar and lecturer.
Over his career he has collaborated with numerous artists in France
and the United States.
Prof. Dr. Boris Groys is Professor of Philosophy and Art History at
the Zentrum fuer Kunst und Medientechnologie (Center for Art and
Media Technology) in Karlsruhe. Born in East Berlin, he studied
philosophy and mathematics in Leningrad and linguistics in Moscow.
He has published numerous titles on intellectual history,
philosophy and contemporary art, including the Topologie der Kunst
(Topology of Art) from Hanser in 2003. He has been a guest
professor and lecturer at institutions internationally. Groys
organized "The Art Judgment Show", a televised talk show on the
state of art, in 2001.
Eungie Joo is a member of the current Etant donnes Artistic
Committee. She has produced and organized projects, residencies,
and exhibitions with Mark Bradford and Glenn Kaino, Sora Kim and
Gimhongsok, Barry McGee, Taro Shinoda, Lisa Sigal, Lorna Simpson,
and Superflex. She was co-founder of "Six Months: Crenshaw" (2003),
a temporary site for conversation, exhibition, performance, and
collectivity. Joo received her doctorate in Ethnic Studies at U.C.
Berkeley. She is currently working on projects with Kara Walker,
Damian Ortega, Edgar Arceneaux and Charles Galnes. Joo is Director
and Curator at the Gallery at REDCAT (the Roy and Edna
Disney/CalArts Theater) in Los Angeles.
Martha Rosler works in video, photo-text, installation, and
performance, in her hometown of Brooklyn, New York and
internationally. Her work focuses on the public sphere ranging from
war to everyday life, often with an eye to women's experience. She
regularly lectures and publishes in her fields and teaches
photography and media at Rutgers University. Rosler has exhibited
at numerous international venues: the Dia Center in New York, the
Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris, the Venice Biennale, Documenta
and several Whitney Biennials, to name a few. Rosler won the 2005
Spectrum International Prize in Photography and her solo exhibition
at London's Institute of Contemporary Art opens in May.
Philippe Vergne is a member of the previous Etant donnes Artistic
Committee (2000-2002). As Senior Curator and head of the Visual
Arts department at Walker Art Center in Minneapolis, he has given
new visibility to artists working in France, such as Thomas
Hirshhorn, Huang Yong Ping, Pierre Huyghe and Philippe Parreno. He
is co-curator of the next Whitney Biennale and was recently
appointed Director of the new Francois Pinault Foundation for
Contemporary Art, the largest privately owned arts institution in
Europe, scheduled to open in 2007 on the Seine's Ile Seguin.
Anton Vidokle is a Moscow born artist who's work has been presented
in international exhibitions such as the Venice Biennale, Dakar
Biennale, and at the venues such as the Tate Modern, the Musee
d'art Modern de la Ville de Paris and the ICA in Boston among many
other. Currently based in New York, he is the founding director of
e-flux, for which he produced and presented a number of projects
and publications including "Do it", "Next Documenta Should Be
Curated By An Artist", and the upcoming "Image Bank for Everyday
Revolutionary Life". Vidokle will be an artist-in-residence at
ArtPace, San Antonio this summer, and is a co-curator of Manifesta
6 in Nicosia.

Etant donnes: The French-American Fund for Contemporary Art is
dedicated to nurturing and supporting outstanding programming of
contemporary artists form France and the United States.
Furthermore, Etant donnes is instrumental in creating a network of
curators from both countries who work together and exchange ideas.
The Fund, created ten years ago, takes its name from the famed
artwork from Marcel Duchamp. By referencing Duchamp's legacy, Etant
donnes underscores the constant interaction between France and the
United States in the history of art. The Fund is now expanding on
its mission by launching a new Curatorial Research Grant program to
encourage innovative projects still in the planning stages.

L'appel à candidature pour la nouvelle session de la commission
d'attribution des ateliers d'artistes de la ville de Marseille est
ouvert.
Les dossiers sont reçus jusqu'au 30 avril 2005.
Ces ateliers au nombre de 10 sont destinés en priorité aux artistes
plasticiens. Ils sont attribués pour une durée maximale de 23 mois,
non renouvelable. Cinq d'entre eux sont situés au 1, place de
lorette 13002
et les cinq autres au19 bd boisson 13004.
Les conditions à remplir sont les suivantes:
- avoir moins de 35 ans
- résider à Marseille
Pour déposer une candidature il faut:
une lettre de candidature,
un CV
un dossier d'artiste
un fiche de ressource (l'avis d'imposition de 2004 par exemple)
La commission d'attribution, qui a la charge de la sélection des
artistes sur dossier seulement, est composée de professionnels,
direction du musée d'art contemporain, de l'école d'art, artistes,
critique, collectionneur, éditeur, chargés de mission pour les arts
plastiques.
La ville de Marseille établit une convention pour chaque artiste
sélectionné par la commission d'attribution. Les loyers sont de
1,20 € par m2 et par mois. La surface des ateliers varie de 60
jusqu'à environ 120 m2, la hauteur sous plafond entre 4 et 7 m.
Certains ateliers disposent de mezzanines d'autres ont accès à une
terrasse.
