the last status conference in la (january 10, 2000) did
not bring any spectacular news. eToys did not drop the
lawsuit and did not even reinstall the dns root entries
of etoy.com... we expected this to happen. we don't need
to hear them talking about a misunderstanding and our
wrong style of negotiation. not at all!
still: some positive developments were reported by our
lawyers. ...etoy is sceptical till we know that eToys
sends other people to negotiate than the ones who tried
to destroy the art work and infrastructure of the
etoy.CORPORATION.

e-commerce giant eToys had to move backwards during
the last weeks... step by step.
this is the result of your efforts!
the eToys stock crashed from $ 67 (on the day of the
injunction against etoy) to under $20 (initial price)
this week: pr damage, legal problems, confusion and
agression are not good to sell plastic toys.

during the last two weeks we got many emails from
people who help to protect the etoy.ART-BRAND.
some of you sent emails with concerns about the
etoy.MEDIA-STRATEGY. others are desperately waiting
for further TOYWAR.orders.
here is our first suggestion after a silent period:
we had to give our lawyers room to get things
together and to convince the court about the fact
that we are not just jerks trying to molest
innocent children with confusing images and
etoy.SHARES. they urged us to stop press
communication and further pressure. the deal
was to do this for 2 weeks! now it's time to
inform you about the situation...
our lawyers did a great job and forced the other
side to understand that we are serious about our
goal to get back the etoy.com domain. etoy
announced a 10 years battle till the end of the
legal system if this is what eToys wants.
at the same time etoy used the attention gap to
established TOYWAR.troops around the globe:
more than 800 etoy.TOY-AGENTS build an permanent
media army of journalists, friends, artists,
security
experts, spies, media activists, djs and lawyers
who observe the enemy 24 hours a day! every move
and promotion statement is scanned and discussed
in our internal TOYWAR.system. eToys needs to
know that there is no chance to cheat or to turn
this into a minor misunderstanding about numbers
and ways to negotiate. THEY WENT TOO FAR. AND
NONE TRUSTS THEM TILL: www.etoy.com is back on
the net and till the etoy.SHARES are legalized!
TOYWAR.com keeps up pressure! there is no reason
to deactivate the tools we established till we
have a clear situation and till the damage eToys
caused is reversed.
on wendsday we transferred 5 etoy.SHARES (etoy.POINTS
in TOYWAR) to every soldier (5% of the 64.000
TOYWAR.shares). to reward beta testing and solidarity.

Die rot-grüne Bundesregierung ist angetreten, die bundesdeutsche
Gesellschaft zu modernisieren. Sie wollte die richtigen Weichen stellen
für die Verwirklichung von Bürgerrechten, Demokratie und
Sozialstaatlichkeit in einer zukunftsorientierten Informationsgesellschaft. Nach
mehr als einem Jahr ist es Zeit zu prüfen, welche Initiativen von ihr gestartet
wurden, welche geplant sind und welche noch ausstehen, um dieses Ziel zu
erreichen. Erste Signale deuten in die richtige Richtung: der Verzicht auf die
Regulierung von Kryptografie, ernsthafte Planungen zur umfassenden
Modernisierung des Datenschutzrechts, auch der Schaffung eines
Arbeitnehmerdatenschutzgesetzes, Pläne für ein Informationsfreiheitsgesetz, eine
Initiative „Schulen ans Netz“...
Es gibt aber auch Signale, die Widerspruch provozieren: umfassende
Pläne zur Telekommunikationsüberwachung, Verpflichtung der Privatwirtschaft,
sich durch die Bereitstellung teurer Infrastruktur hieran zu
beteiligen, Fortschreibung der Kontrollbefugnisse der Sicherheitsbehörden,
Ausweitung der Kontrollen im Gesundheitsbereich; konkrete
Datenschutzinitiativen sind verzagt und halbherzig.
Längst ist die unkritische Technikbegeisterung der Einsicht gewichen,
die Informationsgesellschaft politisch gestalten zu müssen, um nicht
bürgerrechtliche, demokratische und soziale Errungenschaften auf´s
Spiel zu setzen. Die demokratische Gestaltung der informationstechnischen
Rahmenbedingungen setzt eine breite öffentliche Diskussion voraus.
Diese wollen wir auf der Tagung führen. Die Veranstaltung soll über die
aktuellen politischen Planungen und Kontroversen informieren und die Diskussion
hierüber vorantreiben.

*spark-online is now accepting contributions for Issue 6.0, to be released
on 3.1.00 <<< Submissions to the magazine are due the 5th of February.
*spark-online is an online culture magazine, which explores digital culture.
Our dialogue brings focus to the role of technology, digital art, and the
new media in a society that has moved online.
*spark assesses the relative merits of these emerging trends, and places
this analysis within a sociological and historical context. We perpetuate
this dialogue through original articles and art work, and a lively
discussion board >>> a dialogue we call: 'exploring electronic consciousness.'
Submissions should be between 400 and 1000 words. Please use Times New
Roman font (12 point), and include a short biography of yourself at the end
of the piece (no more than 40 words in length). Editorial policy will
favour those submissions that are succinct in syntax, and in the active
voice. Preference will be given to editorial-style opinion articles, rather
than rational, argumentative style article. Given the constraints of the
medium, an editorial style article seems to lend itself better to an on-line
publication.
*spark-online is a collaborative effort; and currently not profitable. Any
revenue we generate covers the costs of keeping *spark-online
operational. This means *spark-online does not pay for the written or
graphic material found in the magazine. That said, in publishing your
work with us, you will find a world wide audience gathered to explore life
in our brave new world. Our growing readership is passionate, and
interested in the issues we present through the magazine. As well, we have
many opportunities to further the exposure of you material to a broad
audience in the electronic community, through link and content exchanges
with other on-line publications and forums.
We have received amazing response to our first two issues, and attracted
the attention of the online community. Over the course of issues first 4
issues, *spark-online was selected as a Netscape Cool Site of the day, and an
Oxford University site of the month, as well as winning over a dozen other
website awards.
*spark online is the subject of feature stories in Fierce.com,
peelworld.com, and techsightings.com. Our content has been linked at
sites such as ugo.com, disinfo.com, eons.com, and osopinion.com, and
*spark-online subscriber base has grown to over 1100.

You will hear from *spark-online on or about the 20th of the month regarding
whether your submission will be published in the magazine (e.g. you'll hear
from us February 20th if we're going to use your work in the March 1st

Het ware gezicht van Arkan getoond in onlinekunstwerk.
Het kunstwerk The Silence van beeldend kunstenaar Marcel van Kerkvoorde
toont het ware gezicht van de vandaag vermoorde oorlogsmisdadiger Arkan.
Het kunstwer, dat ook getoond wordt op internet, bestaat uit veertien
foto's genomen van een interview met de BBC in 1992. De Geinterviewde
spreekt via een ondertiteling de volgende tekst uit.
'Het kan me geen moer schelen dat ze me de verschrikkelijke noemen'
Wanneer je de foto's één vor één bekijkt dan zie je bij hem de
minachting en de arrogantie langzaam uit zijn mond naar buiten komen.
De foto's werden bijeengebracht in verschillende fotografische werken.
Dartnaast zijn ze als diaserie getoond in de voormalige
atoomschuilkelder van Kunstenaarsinitiatief Safe te Dalfsen. Daar werd
deze serie op een van de sluitdeuren getoond.
